Meagher and the Montana Indian Treaty Adventure

The 1865 treaty at Fort Benton, backed by Governor Thomas Francis Meagher and Justice Munson, moved Northern tribes onto a Canadian border reservation, with $7500 in annuities. Culver recalls the journey from Helena to Fort Benton, the distribution scene, and Meagher’s dramatic warning to avert war.

Montana Divorce Record Echoes Crisis in State

Bishop John P Carroll in Helena denounces Montana divorce rates as among the nation’s worst. He cites 323 per 100,000 divorces, compares to 112 nationally, and notes a rising trend from 1886 to 1916. The sermon at the cathedral sparked controversy over marital laxity and social decay. In other news, reports describe a tense evacuation with Indian camps in war paint and a bloodless peace arrival at night.

Culver’s frontier life from 1870s to early 1880s documented

The narrative follows Culver through Indian wars in the 1870s, escaping battles with Cheyennes, and the Pat Hennessy fight. It recalls Deadwood after Wild Bill Hickok’s death, Calamity Jane, and Culver’s moves to Maiden, Lewistown, and the Judith Basin era. He trapped beaver on the Musselshell, saw buffalo herds wiped out, built a Mackinaw boat, traded furs to Bismarck, and later ran a photography business. Culver also photographed Gabriel Dumont, Louis Riel’s lieutenant, before Dumont’s execution.
