Morton Nine Shaft Excavation Advances With Grouting Progress
Excavation on the Morton Nine shaft began in early September with extensive pre grouting and stabilizing work. Concrete pad poured, 25 holes drilled, 2 inch perforated pipes, grout pumped to formation seams, three series of holes, and protective curtain piles at 40 feet depth. By September 19 the shaft reached 27 feet with surface grouting complete and additional grouting possible from the base as work proceeds. Cementation Company of America leads the project under Nick Kepan as Project Manager and Jack Spry, with expectations of shaft completion by end of March 1970 and head frame and elevator installations by June 1970.
