The Grand Saline Sun reports a community Thanksgiving service at Main Street Baptist Church on November 24 at 7 PM. The Union Service features a Mrs. T. J. Hines narration on Grand Saline's creation, a musical program, and prayers from local pastors.
The Grand Saline Chamber of Commerce announces the annual lighting contest for Grand Saline and nearby areas with entries due December 15. Judging December 16 17 and 18 uses out of town judges to assess originality Christmas theme and effectiveness. Prizes 15 10 and 5 plus a $50 gift certificate from Grand Saline Floral Co. for first place.
Van Independent School District schedules a December 4 bond election from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Van High School library to fund a new high school complex a kindergarten first grade building and upgrades to existing facilities. Absentee voting available at the VISD Tax Office November 22 24 and 29 30 and November 27 noon.
Gayle Ingram of Quitman announced his candidacy for the Texas Senate from the new Second District in the May Democratic primary. The 42 year old cattleman and businessman emphasized experience in business and government to foster a strong rural economy and a practical state government. He and his wife Dorothy have three children and are active in the Baptist Church.
Congressman Ray Roberts introduced new water improvement legislation described as the most extensive effort to enhance water resources. He said the proposal would be workable and universally useful in improving water quality and praised the Public Works Committee for hearings on water quality issues.
The Mary Class of the First Baptist Church held its annual senior banquet on Thursday evening November 18. Forty three members attended for food fellowship and a devotional by Mrs Dorothy Simpson with musical selections by Bro Glen Stovall and the church quartet and duet.
Mr and Mrs T W Hayes attended the funeral of Bartley Slaughter in Mesquite Monday morning Slaughter was a cousin to Mrs Hayes.
The Grand Saline PTA meets Tuesday night in the elementary auditorium. The high school speech class directed by Mrs. Tommie Matthews will present the program titled Thankful for What. Reports on the Halloween Carnival and football booth will be given.
The First United Methodist Church opens Advent with morning worship at 10 55 a.m. on Sunday November 28 featuring guest organist Lee Chevalier who will premiere a memory piece for Gene Germany. Rev Ellwood Brown continues the Ten Commandments series with Thou Shalt Not Steal at the 5 30 p.m. service. Administrative Board meets 6 30 p.m. in the sanctuary followed by Charge Conference.
Bill Hollowell of Grand Saline announced candidacy for the State Representative seat in a new district covering Van Zandt Wood and Kaufman counties. He previously represented Van Zandt Rains and Henderson counties and held leadership roles in the legislature.
The Women's Missionary Union of Main Street Baptist Church held a Thanksgiving program on November 17 for Anderson Care Nursing Home patients. Mrs. Z. L. Nations led in the absence of the WMI president. Mrs. Homer Lander gave the devotional, Mrs. Mildred White led singing, and Mrs. Tom Pesnell offered thanks with closing prayer. Fruit baskets with Bible scriptures were distributed by WMI women afterward.
Vera Kirby, an employee of Grand Saline Floral Co, earned third place at the Texas Parade of Flowers in Dallas for her white mum and cotton bole arrangement titled King Cotton the cotton fields back home. The sun office displays feature large mums and show stems from Dallas grown Desert Song and Vanguard varieties.

The second in a series of four immunization clinics for Van Zandt County and Grand Saline is set for 9:00 AM Tuesday November 30 in the Grand Saline Elementary School gym. The clinic offers DTP/TD and Rubella vaccines with Rubella prioritized for those needing both. no child over age twelve will receive Rubella.
Corby-Germany Hospital Auxiliary, led by Mrs. Raymond Corby, is down to three volunteers. They staff a reception desk, assist nurses, and deliver items to patients. The group meets on the second Wednesday each month and dues fund hospital needs.
Texian Press releases Off The Beaten Trail a one volume Texana edition compiling Ed Syers’s 140 stories. Grand Saline and East Texas sites like Kleer Mine Hobo Ranch Rockwall Camp Ford are highlighted with new material and indexing.
The First Pentecostal Church youth group will hold a Thanksgiving bake sale on Wednesday November 24 at 2:00 PM. Located in front of Brookshire's they offer cakes and pies with special orders via phone at 952-3814. Proceeds go to the church bus fund.
The Senior Citizens Club will meet December 2 at the Oddfellows Hall on Highway 80 for a noon covered dish luncheon and Christmas party. Mrs. Kirby Burges said gifts will be exchanged and all senior citizens have a special invitation to bring a covered dish and attend.
