Farmers Cherred By Good Rains Of Past Week
Strong rains last week and especially Wednesday night and Thursday boosted most crops in the area, lifting expectations for crops other than cabbage turnips and greens. Sweet potato growers moved plants into fields and about half the yam crop is now in. Cabbage prices fell due to poor quality and shifting market conditions. Cliff Armstrong paid three and a half cents. E C Heddin of the Van Zandt Vegetable Growers Association noted prices were uncertain due to rapid market changes.

After a two hour meeting on a wage re opening, Morton Salt Co employees at the Kleer Plant Morton will receive a six cent per hour raise effective June 1. Local 3 AFL Chemical Workers union committee members Sox Land Cleo McMillan George Stump Chan McMakin and Morris Bolin approved the raise after presenting it to members Monday night. Large theft charges filed against Kansas couple
Lester Smith aged 25 and Rita McAllister aged 15, both of Kansas, were arrested this week by the Sheriff’s Department near Canton and charged with stealing multiple articles from the L. L. Mewbourn home about three weeks ago. Smith confessed to stealing items from the Mewbourns, plus a Kansas saddle and a California station wagon. Bond set at 9500 each. Texas Rangers assisted with related thefts.
