Texas House member Grady Hogue of Athens proposed a bill to inspect and classify sweet potatoes grown in the state. The measure aims for a prompt efficient program, reasonable costs, a savings clause, and declares an emergency to protect consumers.
A Dallas Sun report notes banks pressuring for state ad valorem tax exemptions while insurance companies and savings and loan outfits may dodge taxes. Grady Hogue says AG guidance is too technical to resolve soon, prompting calls for scrutiny amid other state tax debates.
A 415 foot water well near the football stadium was equipped with a pump and tested. The flow was about 10 gallons per minute. Water lines, the baseball field, and elementary grounds are being installed. Superintendent Guy C. Voorhe said the water was good and that little sand accompanied it.
Oakland women organize a church benefit play to support their church. The program takes place next Friday night March 25 with no admission charged, but offerings will be accepted at the end to aid church needs.
The county tax assessor collector office will stay open Saturday afternoons for two weeks to help residents register vehicles and secure plates. Mrs. Joan DuBone Guess is the assessor-collector.
Athena club and Grand Saline young women's study group sponsor a community sunrise service. Weather permitting it will be at Persons Stadium with a backup at the Methodist Church youth building. Local pastors are invited to participate and a community choir will be formed under Tom Whitson Greeting with the first rehearsal set for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the band hall.
The Athena Club adopts a civic project to supply water to Woodside Cemetery led by Mrs. Alin Smith with Willis Roberson. Funds will come from donations as the city considers extending water lines down Rucker Ridge to reduce piping costs.
A pre Easter revival at the Methodist Church will start April 3 and run for one week. Pastor Walter P. Gibbs announced the event on Wednesday.
Lonnie Kay Cumber four month old son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Paul Climber suffocated while sleeping between his parents in a Nash laydown bed auto at Fruitvale. Mr Climber recently discharged from service in California was visiting his father Paul Climer Route 1 Fruitvale. Funeral arrangements not completed.
Town reports a surge of commerce as Eddie Carpenter’s well plug is completed and Pugh Hardware and Furniture relocates to Main Street. New ventures include a grocery and market by the Tunnell couple, Keith Simpson’s electrical repair shop, Candy Furniture and Fix It Shop, and Barber’s Variety Store planning a move to Grand Saline.
Drilling resumed Thursday after abandoning the No. 1 Eddie Carpenter sub in Clarksville area. The rig and equipment shifted about two miles southwest on the old Dickerson place in the McHenry Survey. Donald Bolls of Longview continues as driller with Gibson Drilling Co, while core tests show shale with no sand.
About sixty people at the Canton Assembly Room voted 16 to 14 against closing the quail season after a Farm Bureau meeting led by T L Roberts. Ernest Marsh argued against closing, urging 12 month food supply and habitat protection, citing East Texas conditions and cover needs. He advocated preserving fence rows and marginal areas with 40 to 50 foot strips and minimal fertilizer to sustain quail populations.
First shipments of turnip and mustard greens came from the Van Zandt Vegetable Growers Association at 65 cents per bundled crate. Association manager E C Hedlin praised the quality as very good. Cabbage and tomatoes show early movement, with ripening and market timing discussed by J F Rosborough of Tyler. Prices for pink tomatoes and green tomatoes vary by market, while East Texas growers consider reducing handling costs to protect returns.
Interest remains high in Fruitvale as R. J. Caraway and Amerada Petroleum pay rentals on leases in the area. Caraway drilled the Travis Peak test near Fruitvale townsite at about 9 000 feet, but oil shows in the Ro Dessa were not enough for commercial production. Seismograph crews work in the area.
Incumbent school trustee Nard announced plans to run again for re election. Wiley Garland and Perry Pugh have not declared their intentions. Filing for trustee posts must go through Ward, the board secretary. The city election will have no contests this year with aldermen Foster Land George Bell Kenneth Berry and Pete Lawrence on the ballot. Enoch Fletcher seeks re election as city attorney and J T York for mayor.
April 11 was fixed as the trial date for J. B. Kindle charged with the February 12 murder of Bobby Lambert in Sand Flat. District Judge A. A. Dawson scheduled the case. Kindle has been jailed without bond. Lambert died two days after being shot during a grocery debt dispute. Kindle has prior insanity commitments.

County 4 H members crowned King and Queen at the Van Zandt 4 H coronation program held at Van Tigh School auditorium. Winners include Charotte Taylor and Richard Shinn, with a court of princes and princesses from clubs such as 4Star Fruitvale Corinth and Edgewood. Judge Staton officiated, and Venita Gibbs and Shannon Carpenter spoke on 4 H work while about 260 people attended.
