Public Schools Week features open house at Grand Saline Elementary and High School tonight. Visitors may tour the campuses from 6 to 8 PM at the elementary and 6:30 to 9 PM at the high school, meet staff, view exhibits, and enjoy PTA fried chicken dinner served from 5 PM to raise funds for school projects.
The school board election is set for Saturday April 1 and the city election for Tuesday April 4. Last day to file for the school ballot was March 1. Gene Carroll of Morton Salt filed after press. Incumbents include John T. Bush not seeking re election and others named on the ballot. City incumbents Mayor W L Garland Jr City Attorney Enoch Fletcher Meyd T Matthews filed for re election. Ray William did not seek re election after moving to Mineola. Remember election dates and vote to shape a better school and city.
Grand Saline schools observe a state wide week with open house Thurs March 9 and a Friday closure. PTA serves fried chicken tonight in the school cafeteria from 5 pm with proceeds aiding a PTA project. Local merchants show class room displays in windows and residents are urged to thank them.
Grand Saline Lions approved March 21 for their annual pancake and sausage supper at the IOOF Hall. Cooking by Lions, serving from 5 p.m. until customers stop arriving. Rev. Don Hubbell joined as a new member. Wallace Ward hosted him. Principal Gerald Gilbert chaired the evening’s program highlighting Public School Week with four Grand Saline High students presenting.
The annual banquet of 1.0.0.F. and Rebekah Lodge was held Friday night March 3 in 1.0.0.F. Hall with 35 members and guests attending. After a chicken and dressing dinner, the group enjoyed quartet singing and piano by Marilyn Monk. Visitors included Rev. and Mrs. Dan Hubbell, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Smith, Nancy Joslin, Darmon Monk and daughter.
Returns from revival meeting show Rev. Dan R. Hubbell of Main Street Baptist Church finishing a preaching engagement at Milford Texas First Baptist Church. The event ran February 27 to March 6 with Dr. Pill Tolar acting as supply pastor during Hubbell’s absence.
Tommy Martin, a Grand Saline native and Grand Saline High School graduate, will work with Grand Saline Funeral Home staff and serve as a sales representative for English Life Insurance Co. He is married to Martha Griffin, has a son Scott, and attends First Baptist Church. He invites visits to catch up in his home territory.
Grand Saline Rodeo Club schedules a meeting Tuesday night at Stephens Feed Store to discuss dues and club affairs. President RK Carnes stresses the importance of attendance as payments are due. Meeting begins at seven.
Forty Grand Saline Indian Band members competed at East Texas State University Commerce on March 4. Twelve earned 1st place medals with two students winning in two events, 21 received 2nd place, and seven earned 3rd place. Emile Pugh and Marsha Lowe won two medals each, with Pugh earning All-State eligibility. Other 1st place winners included Diana Carter, Martha Lowe, Ellen Elliott, Yvonne Carter, Patsy Adams, Steven Mathews, Mary Ann Reid, Vickie Joslin, Jannette Swain, and various ensembles. Second and third place winners covered numerous solos, duets, trios, quartets, and a saxophone quartet, with notable names across flute, clarinet, cornet, trombone, bass, and French horn categories.
Kilgore College hosted the twelfth annual Bach Piano Festival March 3 4 with about 200 high school and college students participating. Grand Saline pupils included Lee Chevalier Leber Beall Danny Darby Wendy Matthews Fran Rash Debbie Shafer Karen Ellis Nina Ruth Beall and Karyn Fisher with Mrs J L Beall Mrs J A Matthews and Mrs Taylor Rhodes providing accompaniment. Teacher Mrs Taylor Rhodes marked the tenth anniversary of her pupils participation. Adjudicator Charlotte Os of Canton Jack Roberts a North State University piano professor served as judge.
The Main Street Baptist Church hosts a revival meeting from March 12 to 19 with focus on the city youth. Pastor Rev Dan Hubbell leads the revival while new Music and Youth Director Mr Lanny Langford serves as revival singer. Evening services run 7 30 nightly Monday to Saturday with Sunday services as usual and the public is invited.
Mr Lanny Langford of Greenville Texas has been hired as Music and Youth Director. His first Sunday was March 5. Langford studied Music and Education at Baylor University and will work with the Adult Youth and Junior Choirs and the church's young people focusing on spiritual recreational and social activities. Mrs Langford works at Tempco Company in Greenville.
A Gospel Meeting runs March 13 to 19 at Grand Saline Church of Christ with Evangelist A A Mennroe of Lubbock speaking each evening at 7 30 except Sunday times 10 50 am and 7 00 pm Local evangelist John Bullock will lead singing Attendees are invited and transportation can be arranged by calling the church
A Pie and Box Supper at Fruitvale School Auditorium on Saturday night March 18 funds will go toward purchasing fire fighting equipment for the Fruitvale area. Rev Bud Willman to begin duties as pastor at Humble Missionary Baptist Church Mineola March 12 located on the Hainesville Highway within Mineola city limits.
A series on Estate Management drew 170 attendees. The first session covered Gifts Inheritance and Estate Taxes with a panel of Van Zandt Bar Association attorneys and Tom Prater Extension Service. The second series on Personal Wills Trust and Deeds will run March 14 15 15 at multiple locations with four Bar Association attorneys and a panel moderator.
The annual Red Cross drive begins March 14 with a $2,000 goal for Van County. Grand Saline will raise funds locally, with half staying for local charity and the other half to support the National Red Cross for major disasters. Local chair man P Friedline notes schools and firms will be asked to contribute. Mrs. Willie Joslin will visit smaller firms. President Johnson proclaims March Red Cross Month and urges public support.
Jones Musical event set for Saturday night March 11 at the Community Center. All bands and musicians are invited to attend as lovers of good music gather for a 7 30 start time.
Grand Saline Jaycees set March 18 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria for their annual installation banquet. Ladies of the Rebekah Lodge will prepare the dinner. New officers to be installed include Lonnie Humphrey president and Randall Gary first vice president with other posts filled by Glenn Clower Eddie Shanafelt Stanley Appleton Mickey Macial Thomas Monk Windell Whites David Welch Robert Williams. Kim Pease is past president. Board meets 7 p.m. and general meeting 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday each month. Eddie Shanafelt expects a strong after dinner speaker with Randall Gary as master of ceremonies.
