Tomatoes Boost Grand Saline Economy Amid Strong Crop Outlook

Tomato buyers Bo Cason of Iola Kansas and Hubert Koonce of Grand Saline praise this year’s crop as the best ever with high quality and output. Cason hopes for 70 000 to 80 000 lugs. shipments go to northern western markets Oklahoma City and Kansas City. Local processing and jobs rise as buyers pay farmers well. A July 8 church supper at Creagleville Methodist funds new furnishings with an auction and music planned, inviting community participation.

Youths tour capital during government in action trip

Westmoreland to retire from Morton Salt this Friday

Earl M. Westmoreland, a 17 year veteran forklift operator at Morton Salt, will retire this Friday June 30 after a career that included shoveling dirt at the present mine shaft in 1930. He plans to run a trailer court in Terrell with his wife Jewell and enjoy fishing, buying a pickup with a camper. He has three sons and four grandchildren.

Rains County appoints Bud Robinson as Sheriff

Bud Robinson, a Rains County native and former ASC official, was appointed by the Commissioners Court in a special session to fill the sheriff vacancy left by Claud Kerr who resigned effective July 1. Mrs. McTaggart and Mrs. Stuart remain in the Tax Collector’s office with Dude Inkidmore as deputy sheriff.

Friendship 4-H Camp At Lake Trinidad Details

About forty five 4-H members from Van Zandt County attended the County 1-H Camp at Lake Trinidad Texas over three days. Activities included Active Quiet Folk Games singing and crafts with night parties featuring Stone Age and Graveyard themes. Junior Leaders Mary and Ethel Holley Buddy Kindle Nancy Kindle Sylvia Warner and Robert Coffman led classes and parties with Mrs T C Kindle and Mrs Buck Warner assisting. Gina and Jeremy Sherman visited family in the area.

Horse And Pony Club Changes Meeting Time

The Grand Saline 4-H Horse and Pony Club held its regular monthly meeting June 26. The meeting night was moved to the 4th Monday each month due to other adult leaders. Betty Weatherall was appointed to chair a fundraising committee. Cindy Phillips and Mike Jones attended the 4-H Camp at Trinidad June 19-21 and found it very interesting. Anyone 9 19 years old or older interested in joining should contact secretary Cindy Phillips or attend the next meeting July 24 at the Riding Club Arena. Mr and Mrs Elton Bell and children of Dallas visited Mr and Mrs Harry Hamilton and boys Saturday afternoon.

Rains Drench Grand Saline Area With Wide Regional Totals

Last Thursday morning heavy rainfall drenched Grand Saline with 4 inches recorded by local observer E P Friedline. Fruitvale, Edgewood and Wills Point reported 6 to 8 inches. Tanks and rivers filled to capacity. year to date shows near normal rainfall with 1967 totals summarized.

County Clerk Lester Slaton Elected to Association Post

Lester Slaton county clerk of Van Zandt County was elected secretary treasurer of the County and District Clerk's Association of Texas at the Galveston three day conference. Grand Saline High School Ex's defeated Canton 9-0 in Canton Sunday afternoon behind Larry Simpson and Bo Fite who combined for 21 strikeouts. Simpson pitched five innings before Fite shut down Canton. runs came in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as Clifford, Simpson, and Mains drove in scores. Clifford and Carter Elliott went 2 for 4 to lead the hit parade.

Mrs Rhodes Attends Dallas Music Teachers Association

Mrs. Rhodes a local piano teacher attended a two day Master Class in Dallas led by Dr. Clarence Burg Dean Emeritus at Oklahoma City University. Burg, a renowned pianist, composer and teacher, also gave a Pre-workshop Lecture Recital followed by an informal reception hosted by the Dallas Music Teachers Association.

Local Nazarene Youths Headed to Church Camp

Six boys and an adult from Grand Saline left Monday for a week at the Church of the Nazarene Camp Grounds about 15 miles northeast of Marshall Texas. They will enjoy hay rides camping and arts and crafts with Ronnie and Mike Monk Gary Huff Kenny Horton Billy Wayne Monk and Harry Hamilton named among the youths and Mrs Jewel Knight accompanying them to assist with crafts.

Vacation Trip Marred By Trailer Home Explosion

A Texas family vacationing in Estes Park Colorado suffered a gas explosion and flash fire in a house trailer. Father Joe Freeman was severely burned and hospitalised as the rest of the family escaped with minor injuries. Oklahoma camper Jerry Cain acted quickly with a fire extinguisher and ice to aid Freeman before rushing him to a hospital forty miles away with ranger escort. Freeman's wife is Janice Davis, daughter of Elmer and (Late) Davis of Grand Saline.
