Willis TH Roberson announces changes effective Saturday June 12 1955 for the Mesquite Sectional Center. Main incoming mail arrives 7 80 am with first class mail by 8 30 am. Mail from Tray 28 9 30 am remains light. Major dispatch moves to 5 25 pm with 4 30 pm Sunday holiday pickup. Eastbound mail departs 6 00 pm except weekends. Zip codes encouraged.
Iola Kansas buyer Bo Cason and Earnest Burges tour Grand Saline tomato fields to assess ripening fruit after rain. If weather stays favorable, they expect as many or more tomatoes than last year while corn harvest approaches and brown rot concerns ease. Cason notes he may start packing when quality is ready and recalls prior planting woes from last year’s conditions.
Jackie Smith son of Mr and Mrs Jack Smith and son in law of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Lewis of Grand Saline earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts at North Texas State University on June 2. He was among 750 graduates in the June exercises. He and his wife Glenda plan to reside in Houston where he will work for Southern Industrial Steel Co.
Grand Saline fans watched the Miners lose 4 to 2 in Gladewater after a seesaw game. Lefty Phillips pitched until worn out as two regular hurlers were absent. Fruitvale visits Grand Saline Sunday at 2 30 p.m. for another league contest following Fruitvale’s 7 3 defeat at Canton.
Vacation Bible School at Pentecostal Church runs weekdays from June 14 to 25 with sessions 9:00 to 11:30 each morning. The closing program is Sunday morning June 27. Theme “My Saviour Teaches Me” features Bible study, exercises, recitation and handwork to show Jesus as the Great Teacher.
Sunday June 6 marked Old Gray Bonnet Day in Grand Saline as Gene and Maggie Aind celebrated a fiftieth wedding anniversary unexpectedly. Beginning at First Methodist Church, a Model T led a caravan to a brush arbor for a family tribute with grandchildren, ten and three children.
Larry T Everitt of Canton route 4 receives early promotion to private E-2 after basic training at Fort Polk Louisiana on May 22. His rifle proficiency high physical test score and leadership earned the two month early promotion under a Department of the Army incentive policy. A 1961 Canton High School graduate, he previously worked for Vermont Marble Company in Dallas.
Friends and loved ones mourn Herbert MeKee after an accidental death in Shreveport Louisiana on Tuesday night. Funeral services are pending with body to be returned to Eubank Funeral Home Canton around 1 PM Wednesday. A full story and funeral details will appear next week.
The Woodside Cemetery in Van Zandt County adds two acres, with Bermuda grass and planned sod. Commissioner Bill Fisher aided by pushing timber to clear remaining plots. A new east fence and updated sign improve upkeep as locals are urged to donate for ongoing maintenance.
Wood County Electric sponsors a Youth on Tour group featuring Miss Brenda Vickery of Quitman and Charles Smith of Quitman. They won an oratorical contest on the contributions of rural electrification and met in Dallas last Friday before the Capitol trip.
Sixty winners from 30 electric systems in Texas traveled by bus to Washington for a 10 day tour with chaperones. They attended a Congressional breakfast, met Texas lawmakers, visited the Capitol and archives, and witnessed a wreath laying at President Kennedy's gravesite. They also toured NRECA headquarters and the Department of Agriculture, learning about Rural Electrification Administration programs.
Rev James A Carlin was reappointed by Bishop E Martin to lead First Methodist and Creagville churches for the coming year. He has served the two churches for two years and returns to Grand Saline with many friends noting his service to the community.
Grand Saline authorities led by Mayor W L Garland announce a June 14 to June 19 cleanup week. Residents and civic groups will conduct door to door trash pickup, lawn mowing and lot clearing while city trucks haul rubbish. An ordinance bans keeping livestock and nuisance fowls, with inspections by state health officials planned.
Sammy Farrar of Canton announces the Grand Saline Recreation Center is now open at 113 W Frank St in the former Hammack Studio building. The interior has new paint lighting and a cooling system with games for all ages to enjoy.
Pony League No 1, after opening with wins over Canton Wills Point and Grand Saline No 2, prepares to face Fruitvale Thursday night seeking a 4 0 season record. Key pitchers Yank Elliott Joe Williams and Johnny Eads led the trio of early victories. Team members include Dorough Davidson Eads Kindle Teal Lowe Williams Elliott Burrow Goggins Matthews Jackson with coach Jimmy Jackson assisted by Dorough Du Bose and field captain Williams.

Grand Saline voters will see a £200,000 bond election on June 29 to fund waterworks and sanitary sewer extensions, a new city hall, and street improvements. City officials promise tax status will remain unchanged due to annexed property and value equalization.
The regular second Sunday afternoon singing will be held at Creagleville on June 14 starting at 2 p.m. Minter White, president, says new songbooks have arrived and visiting singers plan to attend. Everyone is invited to attend.
