The Women's Society of Christian Service met for a 7 am breakfast in Wesley Hall. Former Grand Saline resident and Canton minister E C McKenzie will lead a revival at the Church of Christ starting Friday June 3. Services run daily with morning at 10 and evening at 8 led by Clinton Kirby for singing, through June 12. all are invited.

Irvin Crocker Dies in Dallas After Prolonged Illness

Irvin Crocker aged 51 died Sunday afternoon in Dallas after a long illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Burton Road Baptist Church in Dallas with Rev. H C Adams and Rev. Henry Lawton officiating. Burial followed at Grove Hill Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Bertie Pierce Crocker and four sons, plus his parents, sisters, and a brother. He was a former Morton Salt employee and a member of the Baptist Church and the Odd Fellows.

Little League Play Opens in Van and Grand Saline

Summer tournament for Grand Saline and Van begins Monday June 6 with first games in Van. Seventy nine local boys signed up across four age groups 10-12 8-9 13-14 with two games nightly at 6 30 pm. About 300 dollars is needed to complete field facilities including 180 for reflectors and 120 for bulbs wiring.

Sun Office Chooses Children Photo Contest Monday

The Sun will hold a free children’s photograph contest on Monday June 6 at its office from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Irving photographer Winston B. Lucas will shoot all participants at no cost with proofs shown to parents. Prizes total 18 dollars and 20 cents with three top photos printed in The Sun.

WMA Plans Vacation Bible School At First Baptist

The First Baptist WMA met in an all day session with a covered dish luncheon led by Mrs Belman Nations. Mrs Keith Simpson gave a devotional on Christian Living and Mrs Bess Worthington led the song service. Fourteen women and five children attended while afternoon sessions focused on vacation Bible school plans.

Prospects Good for East Texas Tomatoes and Sweet Corn

Weather remains favorable for farmers as tomatoes and sweet corn move toward market. First East Texas tomatoes reached Rusk at 4 cents per pound while Jacksonville market opens today. The Van Zandt Association plans a pink tomato deal with Jack Noorman Associates showing interest in pinks. Cabbage turnips and greens ship locally but nearing final market swing. East Texas tomato acreage about 19,000 acres, 70 percent of normal. sweet potato acreage up about 10 percent.

Mrs. J. E. Hawkins Dies Sudden at 54 in Home Visit

Mrs Elizabeth Hawkins 54 died Sunday at 1 30 pm at her home after attending First Baptist Church services. Born in Emory she lived most of her life in the area and was a member of First Baptist. Benefit Box Social To Honor Baseballers

The Grand Saline Miners will receive all benefits from a box social hosted by the local American Legion this Saturday night at the fire hall starting at 7 30 p m. The public is invited and urged to bring a box pies or cake to be auctioned to the highest bidder. Proceeds go to the baseball players for equipment and bats and balls. Team players have been contributing this year to buy needed playing gear.

Mineola Set to Vote on Abolishing City Status

Mineola will hold an election on June 21 to decide whether the City of Mineola should be abolished. Wood County Judge G R Cathey ordered the poll after verifying 108 valid signatures on a petition, above the required hundred. If approved, county commissioners would govern temporarily until a new election and city offices can be formed.

Homecoming in Lawrence Springs is set for this Sunday June 5 at the Lawrence Springs Baptist Church. Summer Bible School Plans for June Announced

Plans for three vacation Bible Schools this month include the Methodist Church directed by Mrs. Walt Bryant starting June 6 through June 15 with pre registration this Saturday from 9 to 11 am. The First Baptist Church will hold a weeklong school for 70 plus children ages 4 to 12 with sessions at 9 am and transportation provided by calling No. 49. Activities include a Friday Farm outing to the Faye Fowler farm and lessons led by Mrs. John L. Korleski for kindergarten and Mrs. Odell Young for the primary department focusing on Our Happy World and We Would.
