Lions Club Sees Film On New Phone Dial Techniques

Roscoe Renfrow led the Lions Club meeting at the IOOF Hall in Bash’s absence. The club donated to the hot lunch fund after PTA request and referred March of Dimes drive sponsorship to the board. Guest Garland was reinstated. Rev. Davidson attended. Mike Blackford spoke on the telephone industry and showed a color film on converting exchanges to modern dial systems.

Funeral services for Glenn H. Adams 43 of Route 1 Tatum were held Thursday Jan 14 at Virgin Baptist Church near Tatum with Dr A J Kirkland officiating Burial was in Martin Cemetery He died Tuesday night in a Shreveport hospital after a lengthy illness He was a mechanic WWII veteran and a member of Virgin Baptist Church Survivors include his mother Mrs Oder Adams of Tatum one son Michael Adams of Henderson one brother Langston L Adams of Grand Saline and one sister Mrs Thurman Armstrong of Tatum

Last Rites Held For Frank Walters

J. F. Frank Walters 85 died Friday in a Tyler hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were Saturday at Colfax Methodist Church with Rev. Earl Cantrell and Rev. Max McPherson officiating. Burial followed in Colfax Cemetery under Hilliard Funeral Home Van supervision. Survivors include wife Lottie May Walters two sons Tilman Walters Dallas and J W Walters Longview and two grandchildren David and Dana Walters Longview. Pallbearers were Bob Rusk Harold Rusk Sidney Walters Bill Robinson John Terry Rush and J H Reynolds.

Freeman 87 Ben Wheeler dies after brief illness

Funeral services were held for Charlie T. Freeman 87 of Ben Wheeler at Little Hope Baptist Church with burial in Carter Cemetery. He was a Panola County native, retired farmer, and lived in the Ben Wheeler area 30 years. Survivors include his widow Minnie Freeman. Mike Rains left Dallas for Naval Training Center San Diego after enlisting for three years.

North Texas State names Campus Chat editor for spring

C. Chat Stan Houston of Dallas was elected editor of the Campus Chat at North Texas State University for the spring semester. He also serves as president of the NTSU Sigma Delta Chi chapter. The spring staff includes Temple Pouncey, Jim Duffy, Ladd Kelly, Angela Penna, Mary Tatum, Johnny Powers, Fernando Pinon, and Phillip Bogan as business manager. Bogan, a 1959 Grand Saline graduate, is a junior journalism major.

Regional Meeting of Historical Survey Society Held in Jefferson

Mrs Russell Laney chaired the Van Zandt County group with Alma Flippo and W F Brown as members. Eleven counties joined a January 16 luncheon and Show and Tell at the Excelsior House to share county activities and future plans. Judge D H Boone spoke on Trambles Trace Through East Texas and tour participants viewed Medallion buildings in Jefferson and surrounding sites.

Free State Farm and Ranch Club Opens 1965 Talks

The club plans its first organizational meeting on January 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Canton District Courtroom. Dr. A M Sorensen of Texas A&M will discuss functional efficiency in selecting beef cattle. Officers will be elected. tours and demonstrations are planned. Mrs Worthington and relatives attended Mrs Annie Nichols funeral in Dallas.

Local Grand Saline Seeks New Drive Chairman for 1965 Campaign

Bob Bartlett has been appointed County Chairman again to lead the 1965 March of Dimes Drive in Van Zandt County. The drive runs January through the month, with supplies distributed to towns and communities. Lions Club sponsors seek a replacement chair and volunteers for the Mother's March planned countywide January 25. KLTV Tyler aids with a telethon, and local distributors pledge to place containers.

P-TA Program Presented By Students January 14

The Grand Saline P-TA met Thursday January 14 in the Elementary auditorium. A musical prelude by Dennis Teal and a color guard by Byron Darby Rusty Blanchard and Jimmy Carter opened the program. The pledge and national anthem followed with Rev. James Schafer delivering the prayer. Attendance honors went to Mrs. Cleo McMillan and Mrs. Matthew’s home room. The program on Code of Values featured skits by Elementary Junior High and High School students with post discussion led by Mrs. Harold Davis. February’s program will be a leadership symposium led by Mr. Guy Mixon.

Local Church Groups Plan City Youth Rally

A Sunday afternoon meeting at the Methodist Church gathered several local groups to discuss a city wide youth rally. The event aligns with National Youth Week from January 31 to February 7 and is set for Saturday January 30 at 7 30 p m in the church gym.

The county wide fourth Sunday singing moves from First Baptist Church to First Pentecostal Church on So Houston Street. It will be held Sunday Jan 24 at 2 p.m. Darmon Monk, spokesman, invites all singers to attend.

Guns Recovered in Grand Saline Home Burglary Case

Van Zandt County Sheriff B. W. Ward reports two men Richard Norris and Danny McBride confessed to stealing from Gene Koonce home and other Van Zandt County burglaries. Recovered loot includes rifles, a Browning shotgun, a .22 pistol, radios, TVs, groceries, and fishing gear. Dallas County also holds suspects in other burglaries.

Telethon planned for January weekend in Grand Saline

Grand Saline to host a two day telethon with Tommy Martin directing Saturday night and Sunday January 24. Residents urged to call local numbers 962-3424 for donations and support the March of Dimes drive.
