Council Votes 10 mph Speed Limit For Trains

Grand Saline City Council unanimously approves a 10 mph train speed limit due to unsafe crossings and poor paving. Mayor Garland cites repeated railroad inaction despite multiple letters and calls to correct signals at Houston Street, South Main spur, and the Main Street siding.

Trustees Extend Stewart's Contract for One More Year

Grand Saline school board extended Superintendent Gailen Stewart's contract for an additional year in a 5 to 1 vote. The board urged tighter oversight of principals and teachers and backed the superintendent 100 percent. An open house for Public School Week was planned with minimal disruptions. A Brazilian student Mauricio DaVosa sought to finish the year at Grand Saline High School.

Commissioners Appoint History Survey Committee 1975-76

The Van Zandt County commissioners in regular session appointed 28 citizens to the historical survey committee for 1975 76. They named three Grand Jury members David Waites Marlon Ammons and Bob Ritchie to complete the committee and set a nine member grievance panel with six elected officials and the county judge as chair.

Van Zandt County Banks End 1974 With Gains In Deposits And Loans

Van Zandt County banks finish 1974 with higher deposits and assets, led by Cantons First National and Grand Saline First National. Total deposits rose to 31 381 201 69 and assets to 35 256 588 91, while loans climbed to 14 186 763 28. Six banks show detailed year end figures across assets deposits and loans with Grand Saline, Van, Canton, Edgewood, Wills Point and Ben Wheeler posting gains.

Blood bank donations open next Wednesday inviting locals to give locally. World War I auxiliary meets Friday January 17 at I O C F Hall for a covered dish luncheon. Dues for 1975 are due now per Mrs George Bell.

JV Teams Compete in Grand Saline Tournament

The junior varsity basketball tournament in Grand Saline runs Thursday January 16 to Saturday January 18. Brownsboro, Wills Point, Grand Saline, and Canton play in a four team event with the final on Saturday at 7 30 p.m. Booster Club asks townspeople to attend.
