The Grand Saline High School Band received an invitation to join the Tyler Junior College Band Festival Clinic on March 21 and 22 in Tyler at the new TJC Fine Arts facility. About forty local bands will participate, with clinicians offering constructive feedback during one hour per band.
Funeral services for Yancy Thomas Wright 73 lifelong Grand Saline resident were held Saturday night at Grand Saline Assembly of God. Rev J R Harris officiated burial followed in Riverside Cemetery Bartley Funeral Home handled arrangements. He died Thursday after a short illness he was a retired farmer survivors include his widow a son Pat Wright Emory a daughter Mrs J L Hill Alba a brother W R Wright Grand Saline a sister Mrs Mattie Poyles Grand Saline six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The clinician and band rehearsals were also noted with two named clinicians John Paynter Northwestern University Evanston IL and James Murphy Brownsville High Brownsville Texas.
The Fort Worth Press lauds the Fort Worther, a two column entertainment and pictorial guide published by the Quinn Company. Canton High School senior Robert Larry Ashworth died Thursday in a collision on State Highway 64 near Myrtle Springs as he exited a side road. Edward Gene Lowry of Tyler drove the truck involved. investigation by Kenneth Tidwell and the Sheriff’s Dept. Funeral services were held Saturday at First Baptist Church Myrtle Springs with burial in Myrtle Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers named. survivors include his parents and grandparents.
No candidates have filed for two upcoming school board vacancies. Johnny Smith announced this week that he will not seek another term. His current term expires this year, leaving vacancies to be filled by other contenders.
Fifty six employees of the Grand Saline Independent School District serve 866 pupils. The staff includes thirty one teachers a librarian a counselor a homemaking teacher two vocational agriculture teachers a full time principal a superintendent two clerks one tax assessor collector two custodians five cafeteria workers and eight bus drivers.
A carrier pigeon named Pincon, marked 54-FRP 210, was sheltered at Johnny Rogers Service Station after a norther blew into Grand Sxline. Timmy Rowers, Larry Davis and Tommy Stevens helped carry the bird to the newspaper office, while observers noted its green feather tint in changing light. If owners do not respond, the bird may be released to continue its journey.
A doe deer was struck and killed two miles east of Grand Saline on Highway 80 by a car driven by A. L. Taylor. Chief Pat Heddin aided in moving the carcass to the Grand Saline locker plant. The deer was fat and in good condition. The county wildlife warden attended school at A&M. the deer was moved to charity care, origin unknown.
A quartette will sing at the Methodist Church Sunday night as men take over the choir. The quartet’s name was not revealed, according to Minter White.
Saline's Indians, defending champions, open the 1957 season Tuesday at 8 30 p.m. against Memton Banks. The roster adds six new firemen and notes three lettermen back, with many players listed and a home schedule shifted to Van due to lights. A rabid fox incident near Grand Saline is also reported, along with Fire Department elections and new members.

Don Lloyd Griffin of Route 2 Grand Saline won a $200 calf certificate by catching a calf in the 1957 Silver Jubilee Houston Fat Stock Show Calf Scramble. The Houston show runs through March 8 with about 200 boys scrambling at 19 performances.
The Men’s Brotherhood at the Methodist church held a meeting honoring city government members. CityAttorney Enoch Fletcher spoke on town applications while councilmen and department heads Faye Fowler Jim Allen Foster Land and Perry Pugh discussed their areas. Twenty one attendees plus other councilmen and firemen were present. A supper was served.
John Wheeler and Coy Lindsey announce a Sunday 2 p m meeting at Mineola Junior High School to discuss enlarging the Little League to include more East Texas towns. The league began with Grand Saline Van Canton Brownsboro Mineola Edgewood and may add Quitman Alba Golden and Hawkins.
Morton Salt employees contributed 93 dollars and 27 cents to the March of Dimes fund for Grand Saline, turning in the final amount this morning.
Grand Saline High School reports higher enrollment than last year with 306 students at the end of the first semester, while this year shows 28. The Average Daily Attendance rises from 291 to 810, suggesting a possible new teacher for the high school. Elementary enrollment sits at 538 versus 534, yet daily attendance grows from 489 to 510, indicating another teacher may be added next year for an overall two-teacher system increase.

Melvin B Bailiff of Waterford Teletypewriter Equipment Mechanic in the Communications Department received a Superior Accomplishment Award of 200 dollars for maintaining teletypewriter gear with high efficiency and for rebuilding experimental units. Julian M Rotholz of Norwich earned 12.50 dollars for a safety idea, part of 1 256.50 awarded to 63 employees this year totaling 8 906.00 in savings. Kenneth Berry leased part of the Darby Building and Joe Bailey leased another section of the same building.
Report says Ab Bates had a left knee operation Tuesday lasting about three hours. He is said to be doing fine and appreciates the cards and letters from supporters back home.
A White Elephant Sale is set for Friday at 7 30 p m at Sand Flat church. The public is invited and items range from quilts to dress pins with proceeds aiding Sand Flat WMA to buy a church coffee urn.
