Verdant Fritz dies in Vietnam action at age 21
PFC Alvin Ray Fritz 21, son of Mr and Mrs Alvin Fritz of Grand Saline, died of wounds received in action in Vietnam. A Grand Saline High School band member and Morton Salt Co. employee, he taught Sunday School at Oakland Baptist before enlisting in July 1968. Survived by wife Sherry Kay Fritz, Canton. a sister Mary Thompson of Grand Saline. maternal grandmother Mollie Payne of Grand Saline. Funeral arrangements pending with Hilliard Funeral Home, Canton.

Easter Seal Letters Going Out In Van Zandt County
Easter Seal letters are being delivered this week in Van Zandt County. Mr Woodrow Joslin Easter Seal Representative for Texas Easter Seal Society notes services include physical and occupational therapy speech and hearing programs and equipment loans for disabled persons. The annual Easter Seal Appeal funds research public education programs and scholarships for rehabilitation staff. In 1968 the society aided 11390 children and 6282 adults. Campaign runs through Easter Sunday April 6.

Sabine River Flood Control Committee chair E B Germany urged a large turnout for the congressional hearing on the Sabine River Dam project located five miles east of Grand Saline. U S Rep Robert E Jones and House Public Works flood control subcommittee members will attend in Longview on February 28 for talks on costs and benefits. The plan aims to reduce flood damages, meet water needs for 100 years, support recreation, and boost fishing. total project cost is estimated at 191 million dollars. Services Held For Ex Sheriff Russell Galloway
Funeral services for Russell Galloway 56 of Canton were held at Eubank Funeral Home with Dr Richard Clayborne and Rev Gail Williams officiating. Burial followed at White Rose Cemetery. Galloway died February 19 after a long public service in Van Zandt County including sheriff duties in 1942-48 and 1986-41 under prior sheriffs. Survivors include his wife Romilda, son Charles Russell of Houston, three grandchildren and his daughters in law Luke and family of Terrell.
