Mrs. Royce-Thornton formerly Mary Lou Adkins of Grand Saline was named woman of the year in Texarkana after a banquet and TV appearance. The report notes her inclusion in Who's Who in American Educators and cites events at a banquet and on Channel 4 TV.
Grand Saline Schools will observe Texas Public Schools Week on Thursday March 4 with open houses at the elementary and kindergarten programs at 6 p.m. to 7 30 p.m. The high school will present a program during the evening.
March 4 events begin at 7 45 p m with an open house. The Lions Club will host a spaghetti supper from 5 to 7 p m. Superintendent Gailen Stewart notes elementary work on display and teachers invite parents to visit classrooms during Public School Week and have lunch in the cafeteria.
Richard Koonce and Jerry Strickland acquire Koonce Neal Mobil at Highway 80 and Green Street from Mike Koonce and Pete Neal. New owners plan to run the station with Bill Clark and keep their Ben Wheeler station and grocery in operation.
Three sitting Grand city councilmen Herbert Clower Hershel Walker and Howard Whatley filed for reelection by March 3 to fill the three vacant council posts. Holdover members RL Rusty Parrish Bud Davidson and Mayor Wiley Garland Jr remain.
General Telephone asks for a restraining order against five city council members and Mayor Garland to halt interference with a requested 9.45 percent rate increase. The March 3 hearing before District Judge Thomas Crofts will determine if an injunction is issued. The company says current rates prevent a fair return and may force many collection and service-suspension suits.
Balloting for five new Cham ber of Commerce directors proceeds slowly as five retirees leave after three years. 40 ballots reported with 14 Citizen of the Year nominations. Banquet set April 6 at the high school gym with Speaker Bill Gayton and Omega Phi Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year award. Tickets four dollars. Charles Parker, chamber president.
Bibletime Book Store at 231 Main Street relocates over the past two and a half years to a new building at 411 Stadium Drive. The store will offer Bibles church supplies Christian books music records tapes plaques and gift items and will house the Bibletime Evangelistic Association. The Continental Trailways bus station will move to the J L Beall building at Main and Frank Streets operating from the Frank Street entrance with freight shipping and bus tickets available Miss Beth Thomas will run the station from 8 30 a m to 6 30 p m.
Only one candidate filed for the three open Grand Saline School District trustee seats. David Darnell a conservation contractor filed this week for one position while incumbents Heddins Dr W J Thomas and Cleatus Carroll expire and a April 3 election will fill the seats. March 3 is the filing deadline or 30 days before the election. Holdover members include Mike Jones Murry Means Bob Lee and Wiley Garland Ml.
Van Zanat County schedules its school board race for April 3 1976 with a two year term. Filing deadline is March 3 and candidates must file at County Judge Richard L Ray’s office during normal hours. Incumbents CR Cumbie and Lester Woolverton leave at end of term. holdovers include Harrison Estes LiL Mewbourn and David Wingo.
Lions Club to host a spaghetti supper Thursday March 4 in the elementary cafeteria to benefit the Persons Park fund. Tickets at $1.50 for adults and $1 for children, with door prizes drawn every few minutes during the event aligned with Texas Public School Week activities.
Eight Future Farmers of America students received top awards at the FFA Parent Member banquet held at the school Monday night. Nearly 200 attendees heard guest speaker Dr. Charlie Jones of East Texas State University. Awards included star chapter farmer Mike Means and star greenhand Danny LaPrade with numerous merit certificates and contest winners named.
