Local singers will present a gospel program at Anderson Nursing Home on Tuesday February 24 starting at 6 30 p m. Dewey Pierce chair invites the public to attend and enjoy the performances.
Three seats will be contested on both the city council and the school board with filing due by March 3. Lisanne WAEMDEFT was the only council candidate at noon, while no candidates have filed for the school race. Incumbents Hershel Walker Howard Whatley and Clower face re election on the council and Dr W J Thomas Cleatus Carroll and Truman Heddins on the school board.
A Sunday robbery attempt ended with five suspects jailed in Van Zandt County after a high speed chase and manhunt. Carroll Golden James Singleton Jesse Singleton Kathy Singleton and a juvenile were held on burglary charges with bonds set at five thousand dollars each. Golden faced a ninety three thousand dollar bond while the other two adults remained held in lieu of bond. The incident began at a Dallas area service station near Canton when the suspects tied with a gunman. The car wrecked south of the station and the occupants scattered. Deputies and highway patrolmen recovered Golden and later captured Jesse Kathy Ann and the juvenile. the gunman remained at large until Sunday morning
The Van Zandt County Commissioners Court met in abbreviated session to consider bids for gravel hauling and a Wills Point Chronicle swing loader. The court approved advertising in Canton Herald and Wills Point Chronicle. The Child Welfare Board received 90 for one child for 30 days. The court granted bond return for Brown Edition in Bill Flowers precinct. Next meeting set for 10 a.m. Monday Feb 23.
The Lions Club voted to host a spaghetti supper on March 4 in the elementary cafeteria to raise funds for the Grand Saline Youth Foundation park project at Persons Park. Ray Rucker, Gerald Gilbert, Shirley Anderson, and Galloway Darby were named committee chairs along with other planned fundraisers discussed.
First Church of the Nazarene in Grand Saline called Rev. Jerrold R. Lake as pastor. He will preach his first Sunday February 29. Lake, an ordained Nazarene elder, has pastored in Kansas Arkansas and Texas and serves currently in Lamesa. He is a Bethany Nazarene College and Nazarene Theological Seminary graduate with extensive district leadership experience. His wife Lois studied music. they have three children, David Mark and Shonda Danae.
Bill Clayton, longtime Texas House member since 1962 and elected speaker January 14, will speak at Grand Saline’s 18th annual Chamber of Commerce banquet. The event is Tuesday April 6 in the high school gymnasium. He has led on water and conservation issues.
Frank Trent, president of the Youth Foundation, says park building fund contributions are still welcome. Less than $9,000 remains to reach the $35,060 campaign goal, with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant covering the rest. Latest donors include Kitchena Club, Mrs. Lurlyne Strebeck, C.M. Darnell, Vera Griffith, Mrs. Ray Hodges, Buck Wright, H.A. Martin, William Louderman, Royce Bates, and the Jones Community.
Clayton anchors regional service roles with the National Conference of State Legislatures and Southern Legislative Conference. He chairs, serves on committees, and is a deacon at Spriglake First Baptist. Fort Worth presses and Lamb County awards mark his honors. Tickets for the banquet are four dollars.
About 20 potential dribblers are invited to workouts at the old gym, 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Saturday, with coaches Henry Knight, John Pryor, Ford Maciel, and William Neal urging interested players to join. The aim is to form three teams for an elimination game to benefit the Sports Boosters.
School students Laura Anderson and John Darby will attend the Washington Workshop a week long citizenship education program in Arlington Virginia They will register Sunday Feb 22 at Marymount College The seminar includes visits to the White House informal meetings with senators and congressmen and ends with their return Feb 29
