Iron Bridge Lake Seen As Valuable Resource For Texas
Carroll Swearingen of Sabine River Valley Authority told Lions Club members at Washington Birthday Banquet that Iron Bridge Lake will boost Grand Saline and nearby towns with a growing lake economy. The lake spans about 16 miles by 3 miles and will prevent up to eighty percent of flooding below the area during heavy rains. It is funded by revenue bonds with no taxpayer cost, and when full will be Texas’s largest manmade conservation lake with a dam base of 542 feet and height of 87 feet. Construction uses thousands of cubic yards of concrete. progress targets summer 1940 completion.

York Construction Co of Houston won the timber land clearing contract with a low bid of 748475 dollars. FM 35 road construction advances include a mile and a half long concrete and steel bridge over the lake. Swearingen notes rotenone will be sprayed on tanks and river holes this summer to kill rough fish and restock, while much timber remains standing especially near creek inlets away from the dam.

Funeral Services Held for Mrs. J. D. Attkisson in Grand Saline
Mrs. J. D. Attkisson 79 of Grand Saline died Wednesday after a long illness. Services were Friday at Main St Baptist Church with Rev. James Dixon and others officiating. Burial followed at Woodside Cemetery under Bartley Funeral Home. Survivors include three sons, six daughters, two brothers, 25 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Dempsey White, John Boyles, Wylie Thomas, Carl King, and Bo White.

Bridge Burning Charged Against Canton Youths
Three Canton area teenagers were charged this week with burning a county bridge between Colfax and Moore. The Jan. 2 incident damaged a five span, 80 foot bridge with an estimated repair cost of $1700, according to Criminal District Attorney J. S. Grisham.
