Fort Worth Funeral for Van Zandt Educator W E James

W E Waxie James longtime educator and Edgewood native died February 7 1952 at All Saints Hospital Fort Worth. He taught at North Texas University and the State University and served as Assistant to state superintendents Blanton and Woods. He was survived by his wife daughter and four grandchildren plus siblings and other relatives. Funeral services were held in Fort Worth and Edgewood with musical contributions by local artists. He dedicated his life to youth and education.

Sand Flat Sets Meeting Dates For Improvement Program

Sand Flat residents will meet on the third Thursday of each month to participate in the Texas Community Improvement Program. The contest, sponsored by Texas investor owned electric companies and administered by the Texas A M Extension Service, offers district and state prize money. Funeral Rites Held For Laura Godwin

Funeral services for Mrs. Laura L. Godwin were held in Grand Saline with Barney Thompson officiating. The 91 year old native of Van Zandt County died February 12 at her son Pick Smith’s Odessa home. she leaves four daughters, four sons, 26 grandchildren, and 50 great grandchildren.

First Baptist Church Names Rev Mark A Wells as Pastor

Rev Mark A Wells, formerly Hayden Baptist Church pastor and Wills Point High School teacher, accepts the call at First Baptist Church. He begins pastoral duties February 18 1962. Wells holds a Master of Education from East Texas State College and studied at Southwestern Baptist Seminary. He has over twenty years of pastoral and public school teaching experience. Mrs Wells also holds East Texas State College Library Science degree. They have two daughters Joyce Martin and Brenda Gail. The church invites worshippers to join services next Sunday with a warm welcome.

Cache of marijuana found on Van Zandt County farm

State agents and Dallas detectives uncovered 23 pounds of marijuana in coffee cans hidden in hay on a 70 acre farm a few miles south of Canton. The owner, T W Downing of Dallas, was arrested in Dallas on illegal possession with multiple charges. A court order will be sought to destroy the marijuana after cases are concluded.

Creagleville Cemetery Expands With New Tract

J H Creagle Jr of Fruitvale purchased 2 acres from A V Rumbelow and deeded it to Creagleville Cemetery. The land joins the south edge and will be cleared for cemetery lots with proceeds funding maintenance. J D Stanford Dies in Van Age 81

Funeral services for Jeffer son Davis Stanford were held at Hilliard Funeral Home Chapel in Van. He died in a Kerrville hospital Monday after a long illness at age 81. Survived by five nieces and two nephews. Born in Alabama he had lived in Van about 75 years. Frank Richardson officiated with interment at Garden Valley Cemetery.

Ministers Face April Fifteenth Social Security Deadline

Ministers must file a waiver certificate by April 15 1962 to elect Social Security coverage for 1960 and 1961 if they have at least 400 dollars net earnings from their ministry. Local Girl Rescues Brother From Shirt Fire

In Grand Saline on a Wednesday afternoon six year old Pat Dennis burned when his oversized shirt ignited while warming by a heater. His sister Paula a 15 year old used a bath mat to smother the flames saving him from a major tragedy. Pat suffered minor burns with a small third degree spot.

Jones 4-H Elect King And Queen

The Jones Community 4-H Club met in the Community Center and elected Miss Mary Fritz as queen and Clyde Thompson as king. They planned a tree sale through March and a bake sale for Saturday morning February 17, plus a "42" party on February 28, with proceeds for the 4-H summer camp. Leaders include Mr and Mrs Howard Thompson, Mrs Frances Fisher, and Mr and Mrs Alvin.

He is a Army veteran with Purple Heart Silver Star Bronze Star, serves in Army reserves, and lives at 523 N Main with wife Eleanor and five children. He and his family belong to First Methodist Church, Lions Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
