Local column notes an eight county gathering at the school cafeteria for the Agri Business Conference on February 25. The piece highlights farming’s role in Grand Saline’s economy and urges public school week in March to recognize evolving education needs for a scientific future.
Dr Walter H Jarvis Jr of Grand Saline and Scott and White Hospital Temple has been selected by hospital staff to attend radiology study conventions in Chicago and New York. He has worked in radiology for years and will travel for the education event. W H Jarvis Sr recently treated for a broken ankle from the snowstorm and is recovering with periodic trips to Temple.
W E Waxie James longtime educator and Edgewood native died February 7 1952 at All Saints Hospital Fort Worth. He taught at North Texas University and the State University and served as Assistant to state superintendents Blanton and Woods. He was survived by his wife daughter and four grandchildren plus siblings and other relatives. Funeral services were held in Fort Worth and Edgewood with musical contributions by local artists. He dedicated his life to youth and education.
Sand Flat residents will meet on the third Thursday of each month to participate in the Texas Community Improvement Program. The contest, sponsored by Texas investor owned electric companies and administered by the Texas A M Extension Service, offers district and state prize money. Representatives met in Canton with other communities to discuss progress toward farm home and community improvement goals supervised by A M Extension Service.
Funeral services for Mrs. Laura L. Godwin were held in Grand Saline with Barney Thompson officiating. The 91 year old native of Van Zandt County died February 12 at her son Pick Smith’s Odessa home. she leaves four daughters, four sons, 26 grandchildren, and 50 great grandchildren.
Grand Saline police chief Pat Hedding warned parents and youths that firing BB guns within city limits is illegal. He said several street lights were shot out, and those responsible will be prosecuted.
The Young People of the Bible Baptist Church will journey to Palestine for the Fast Texas Youth Fellowship. They won the High Attendance Award at the Athens fellowship. Palestine fellowship may seal the plaque with Grand Saline and Mt. Pleasant in a runoff for permanent possession.
The regular third Saturday singing will be held February 17 at Lawrence Springs at 7 30 p m. Tommy Martin says we have good singing groups and singers with Williams Quartet Smith Quartet and Armstrong Trio among those coming from Grand Saline. The public is invited.
Rev Mark A Wells, formerly Hayden Baptist Church pastor and Wills Point High School teacher, accepts the call at First Baptist Church. He begins pastoral duties February 18 1962. Wells holds a Master of Education from East Texas State College and studied at Southwestern Baptist Seminary. He has over twenty years of pastoral and public school teaching experience. Mrs Wells also holds East Texas State College Library Science degree. They have two daughters Joyce Martin and Brenda Gail. The church invites worshippers to join services next Sunday with a warm welcome.
Ben Friend of the Internal Revenue Service in Tyler Texas warns that persons with net self-employment earnings of 400 or more in 1961 must file a federal income tax return and pay self-employment tax. Free Document No 5047 about Self-Employment Tax is available from the IRS office.
State agents and Dallas detectives uncovered 23 pounds of marijuana in coffee cans hidden in hay on a 70 acre farm a few miles south of Canton. The owner, T W Downing of Dallas, was arrested in Dallas on illegal possession with multiple charges. A court order will be sought to destroy the marijuana after cases are concluded.
J H Creagle Jr of Fruitvale purchased 2 acres from A V Rumbelow and deeded it to Creagleville Cemetery. The land joins the south edge and will be cleared for cemetery lots with proceeds funding maintenance. Local attorney E G Fletcher donated legal work and surveyors Oliver Cofer FE T Hawkins and A V Rumbelow donated surveying services.
Funeral services for Jeffer son Davis Stanford were held at Hilliard Funeral Home Chapel in Van. He died in a Kerrville hospital Monday after a long illness at age 81. Survived by five nieces and two nephews. Born in Alabama he had lived in Van about 75 years. Frank Richardson officiated with interment at Garden Valley Cemetery.
Ministers must file a waiver certificate by April 15 1962 to elect Social Security coverage for 1960 and 1961 if they have at least 400 dollars net earnings from their ministry. Those earning less receive no coverage. Request Form 2081 from Internal Revenue and file with the Director. Contact local Social Security office for OASI‑33 pamphlet.
In Grand Saline on a Wednesday afternoon six year old Pat Dennis burned when his oversized shirt ignited while warming by a heater. His sister Paula a 15 year old used a bath mat to smother the flames saving him from a major tragedy. Pat suffered minor burns with a small third degree spot.
The Jones Community 4-H Club met in the Community Center and elected Miss Mary Fritz as queen and Clyde Thompson as king. They planned a tree sale through March and a bake sale for Saturday morning February 17, plus a "42" party on February 28, with proceeds for the 4-H summer camp. Leaders include Mr and Mrs Howard Thompson, Mrs Frances Fisher, and Mr and Mrs Alvin.
James Dee Berry deputy maintenance foreman for the city for 25 years lives at 820 Hickory and has four years in current post. He and wife Madie Harvey Berry have three children and attend Bible Baptist Church. Charles F. Dennis manager of Grand Saline Funeral Home arrived ten months ago after 20 years in the business, born in Taylor, educated in Liberty Hill and Baylor. He is a Army veteran with Purple Heart Silver Star Bronze Star, serves in Army reserves, and lives at 523 N Main with wife Eleanor and five children. He and his family belong to First Methodist Church, Lions Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The East Texas Agri Business Conferences will begin in Grand Saline on Monday February 26 at the Elementary School auditorium. County representatives from Hunt Hopkins Wood Rains Kaufman Henderson Smith and Van Zandt will attend.
Assistant Commissioner of Education Dr Wilborn spoke to Grand Saline School staff and community members in two sessions last Wednesday. He outlined new accreditation standards and curriculum changes and demonstrated teaching machines. The evening event included a PTA dinner and a Grand Saline High School choir recital.
At the regular meeting the Grand Saline School Board set the election for Saturday April 7 to be held at the Chamber of Commerce office. Incumbents Barry Blakeley and Floyd T Stewart term expirations. two three year terms up for election. Filing closes March 7 at 4 30 pm at the post office. James Woodard named science teacher for 1962 68 term to replace Charles Milburn. Woodard also serves as assistant football coach and junior high social studies teacher.
Lorena Boyd Ivy formerly of Crossroads and Grand Saline was buried Monday in Creagleville Cemetery. The Rev Hobbs of Dallas Calvary Pentecostal Church officiated. Survived by daughter Jewel Guy and three sons and numerous grandchildren. services by Anderson Funeral Home of Mesquite.
