Grand Saline High School Freshman Basketball Team won the district tournament at Mineola on Friday night February 8 by defeating Van 45 to 23. Coached by Ernest J. Hitt, team members include Barry Marett and Johnnie Vaughn.
A Grand Saline waitress helped a poorly dressed man with coffee then used her own tip money to pay for it, claiming the money was hers. A cafe witness noted the act as the man left, and the diner asked whose funds covered the drink. The waitress said the tips in a glass under the counter funded the cup. The crowd included Jerry Johnson and others listed. The Freshman Basketball Team leads a Round Robin tie with Kaufman and Van for district glory, with games this week to decide champions.
Street Commissioner Foster Land says an engineer will arrive from Greenville to help start laying new sewer lines in Grand Saline. The project covers North Main Spring and Rucker Ridge streets and should take three to four weeks. About 25 to 30 homes currently without city sewer will be able to tie on once completed.
Truman Williams of Williams TV and Radio Appliance, who recently moved near the Post Office, announces the shop will close because of illness but hopes to reopen soon. He plans to sell four new TV sets and a Philco microwave at cost.
The Grand Saline Lions Club will host a Ladies Night at the Feb 19 meeting at 6 20 PM at the Ranch Motel. Rev Bill Morgan of Greenville will be the main speaker, a native Texan educated at Greenville High School Southern Methodist University Garrett Bible Institute Northwestern University and ordained Methodist clergy. He serves as pastor of Kavanaugh Methodist Church in Greenville and is married with one child.
Mrs. T. T. McKibben 90 died at 7 15 a m Friday at her Jones area home. A Mississippi native, she lived in Jones since 1900 and was a Methodist. Funeral held 2 30 p m Saturday at Sand Flat Baptist Church with Rev Howard Conatser and Rev J B Fowler officiating. Burial in Sand Flat Cemetery under Bartley Funeral Home direction. Survived by husband two sons Alvin of Van Chester of Grand Saline three daughters S H Rhodes of Grand Saline Ester Farrar of Brownfield Myrtle Rogers of Dallas a brother Andrew Nations of Grand Saline 17 grandchildren 41 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Pallbearers were her grandsons.
The American Legion Auxiliary women plan a meeting at the Legion Hut at 7 30 p m on February 21. Mrs Bill Blanchard reports the event and urges all members to attend.
Four city leaders filed for reelection this week. Mayor Fowler seeks a full term after filling an unexpired term. Councilman Billy Whitehead and Street Commissioner Foster Land also filed, with J Harold Cheser and Ben Kuykendall among those filing for council seats. Election day aligns with a special Senate election but uses three polling places City Hall East Box and West Box to avoid confusion.
The Sun publishes the first in a series of Church Pages titled Were You There inviting readers to consider fine thoughts. Churches were contacted to submit their calendars for the next 26 weeks and sponsors are thanked in participating merchants’ stores.
At a Thursday meeting at the Methodist Church Grand Saline Cub Scout troop elected Raymond Sloan as Cubmaster. Guy C Pryor became assistant Cubmaster with A B Nations as Committee Chairman and John Huff treasurer.
Grand Saline High School announces committees and plans for Public School Week. Fourteen students earned A averages in the first semester including seniors Gail Pennett Mary Earl Persons and Betty Jane Pail juniors Karen Bufka sophomores Lou Carrol Charlotte Land June Mercer and Dennis Hale freshmen Terry Anderson Clenda Carter Nancy Gipson Glenda Nell Lewis Faye Loven and James Procter.
The World Day of Prayer program is scheduled for Monday at 2 30 PM at the Methodist Chapel with all women urged to attend. The event, observed by Christians worldwide, has a long history in Grand Saline. Additionally Bill Bass returned from Black Lake with a string of bass and Bass and Howard Berry reported a catch of about thirty bass.
Red Elliott, owner of a Trail er Supply Company and advertiser in the Grand Saline Sun, flew over East Texas Tuesday night but lost his instruments. He landed on T. D. Hunt's Big Sandy farm, hitched a ride to Big Sandy, stayed at Westward Ho Lodge, and next day arranged transport to return to the plant and retrieve his plane.
Ab Bates is improving rapidly in two casts at Mother Frances Hospital Tyler with bruises and the prospect of further surgery. He recalls little of the Morton Salt Mine accident that broke both legs after salt tumbled. Visitors say his spirits are good.
Alf Roberson chairing the Public School Week committee from the Masonic Lodge announces plans for Texas Public School Week in Grand Saline. The program includes a Youth Revival February 13–17 at Nazarene Church, nightly at 7:20 with 7:15 prayer, and open house March 7 plus faculty dinner March 4.
The Oddfellows led by D. B. Carter lease the second floor of the Darby Building to create a lodge meeting hall. The Rebekahs will use the space as well. An outside stairway and partitions are being built this week, and the two groups plan fund raising to buy equipment.
The Grand Saline Bank will be closed on February 12 and February 22 for holidays.
Leon Vineyard of Terrell famed high school football coach will address the Men's Brotherhood at Main Street Baptist Church on Monday night February 18 at 7 30. He localizes his talk on Christianity In Athletics and will be joined by Terrell grid stars and the Williams quartet with Helen Crump at the piano. The event is open to men of all denominations.
Judge A A Dawson of Canton has served the 86th Judicial District Court for fourteen years and begins his fifteenth year with plans to seek re election in 1958. The district covers Kaufman Van Zandt and Rockwall counties and Dawson travels among the three county seats. Born near Canton he studied at the University of Texas and was admitted to the bar in 1919. He served as Van Zandt County Attorney from 1920 to 1924 and later as State's Attorney with the Court of Criminal Appeals. He returned to private practice in 1980 then was elected County Attorney again in 1933 and became District Judge in 1938. He recalls World War One air service and his pilot license remains.
An important band booster meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night. Clinton Kirby urges all to be present as the meeting begins at 7 p.m. February 19 in the band room.
The Golden Gloves tourney in Tyler closes with Glenn Cunniff winning the Outstanding Open Class trophy after a first round KO of Bill Casey. Fox and Cunniff advance to Fort Worth for state championship bid while local fighters Pettier Parker Hamblin and Evans drew crowd reactions in contentious bouts.
Alf Roberson, County Chairman, reports over 3600.00 raised so far in the March of Dimes drive across Van Zandt County. Grand Saline leads with 1822.27 including Mothers March 175.00 while Wills Point totals reach 1084.41 with 38.25 from the Mothers March. Canton stands third at 987.76 with 360 plus from Mothers March and 300.88 from Van's. Ben Wheeler reports 206, Edom just over 100, Edgewood expected over 200.
