Saline hosts church service Sunday morning followed by lunch sponsored by Band Boosters at the elementary. The city library opens regularly and Mrs Hargrove can suggest winter evening readings. Weather remains fickle with rain and sunshine. Reverend Fred T Lang outlines five Lenten sermons under the theme If I Believe ending Easter Sunday.
The Band Boosters host a salad dinner in the elementary cafeteria starting at noon Sunday February 16. Menu includes meat vegetable tossed gelatin fruit salads bread crackers and iced tea. Tickets are 2 at the door or 1 50 in advance from band members. students 1 and preschoolers 50. Proceeds fund the band trip to Galveston in April.
The Chamber of Commerce board discussed reviving the Salt Festival and named committees to organize a civic clubs meeting. Plans suggest a 3 day to week long festival with the rodeo in early June and an April membership banquet likely in the high school cafeteria with a speaker secured and entertainment chosen. Ballots for five chamber vacancies will be mailed and tallied at the March meeting.
The commissioners court chose the First National Bank of Grand Saline as county and school depository after opening three bids in Monday’s meeting. The decision highlights the bank’s bid amid local funding oversight.
Frank Trent was re elected president of the Grand Saline Youth Foundation with Truman Heddins named vice president and Mrs John Means secretary treasurer. Rex Hood was named baseball committee chairman and Windell Whites finance chair. The group discussed park improvements including a swimming pool and tennis court funded via Texas Parks and Wildlife Service grants. The community center meeting is set for Wednesday February 12. County bids for banking services were approved with Grand Saline National Bank at 35180 per year, replacing Canton and Wills Point banks. A bid process for a ditch cleaning swing loader was announced with bids opening February 24.
Frank Trent, president of the Grand Saline Youth Foundation, urged the City Council to take title to Persons Park. He said a grant from the Department of the Interior via the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service could fund a swimming pool four tennis courts and other recreational facilities if the city qualifies.
Trustees heard parent complaints about an elementary teacher amid reports of student embarrassment and heavy homework. The board extended contracts for high school principal Gerald Gilbert and elementary principal Shirley Anderson and set trustee election dates for April 5, 1975 with terms of two members expiring. Absentee voting runs March 17 to April 1.
Grand Saline Library now operates Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 to 4 and Saturdays 9 to 12. Librarian Mrs. Hargroves says slow business should improve as the public adjusts. The council plans an April 5 election for two city council seats and the mayor. City taxes total 40,950.40 to date. radar units and a new 1,000 gallon fire truck were discussed as options to improve safety and services.
