Fruitvale Chili Supper Saturday to Aid Firemen

The Fruitvale Fire Dept sponsors a chili and bean supper this Saturday Feb. 14 starting at 6 p.m. Proceeds fund firefighter insurance. After eating, bingo will be played as Mrs Hallie Randall invites everyone to attend for a good bowl of chili or beans and a game.

City Election Set and Water Project Discussed

The city council set April 3 for the election of three councilmen with a March 3 filing deadline. Terms of Clower Walker and Whatley expire. They discussed installing a water tank and buying two lots on Hiram Street to place the tower, with taxes totaling $38,891.41 collected to date. The meeting ran Thursday night due to travel.

One Charged With Arson In Van Zandt County

James R. Waggoner, 46, formerly of Edgewood now in Elmo, released Feb 5 to Kaufman County on auto theft after posting a $1000 bond for willfully setting grass fires. He also paid fines in Wills Point for public drunkenness and driving without a license. Waggoner was apprehended after a department alert for the vehicle, issued by Edgewood Fire Department to the Van Zandt County Sheriff about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, as Edgewood firemen answered two grass fires. Deputy Pete Wright investigated the fires and charged Waggoner with starting them. Sheriff Ward said three burglaries were reported in the county, including Colfax Grocery owned by Joyce Clements entered through the back door with tools, thefts including cigars and bologna from the refrigerator, Feb. 6, and the home of Arty Hayes of Edom also entered. Means Heads Annual Easter Seal Campaign in Van Zandt

Means Murry Means of Grand Saline will lead the 1976 Easter Seal Appeal in Van Zandt County announced by Irving A. Baker of Dallas president of the Easter Seal Society for Crip pled Children and Adults of Texas Residents in the county will receive the letters beginning March 1. The appeal aids disabled persons and their families with treatment and service and runs through Easter Sunday April 18. Means is one of 234 Texans serving in this capacity to help meet the statewide program costs. In 1975 the Easter Seal program assisted 10 768 handicapped Texans with $1 820 547 spent by the Texas Easter Seal Society and its network.

Vegetable Growers Association to Meet in Grand Saline

East Texas Vegetable Growers Association invites farmers and ranchers to a Grand Saline meeting Saturday February 14 at 2 p m in the community center. Alton Knight president notes membership is 25 rising toward 200 as the group plans bulk fertilizer buying a possible Chandler feed mill and a cooperative for fertilizer feed grain and seed potatoes with a marketing system for produce. Trustees Extend Contracts For Gilbert And Anderson

Grand Saline School Board extends high school principal Gerald Gilbert and elementary principal Shirley Anderson contracts through 1977-78 at current salaries. Board votes split on Anderson, with Jones opposing Anderson's extension. Also approves field use by other teams for $5 per night, sets midnight curfew and lights out, and discusses charging admission to baseball to offset costs. Bids for 75 band uniforms accepted from Fruhauf, with delivery before next school year. Band Booster Club reports $8,100+ in funds. Trustee election set for April 3 with filing by March 3. several offices up for reelection.

Van Zandt Seeks Bicentennial County Designation

County Judge Richard L. Ray announces Van Zandt County’s bid to be named a Bicentennial County. A meeting is set February 21 at 2 p.m. in the district courtroom to hear ARBA plans and discuss countywide activities ahead of an August 12-14 county fair Bicentennial celebration.

Commissioners Accept S W Life Insurance Bid

The Van Zandt County Commissioners unanimously approved the Southwest Life Insurance Co plan over Blue Cross Blue Shield after Judge Richard Ray called it a better overall contract.
