Rain Regimes Bring Three Inches to Grand Saline Area

Grand Saline and surrounding East Texas counties recorded a significant rainfall last Saturday, February sixth, with totals near three inches. Farmers report replenished water supplies, grass growth, and improved pasture and early vegetable crop prospects as weather observer EB Friedline notes the pattern follows recent lighter months.

Local High School Student Named Homemaker of Tomorrow

A Grand Saline High School student, Betty Crocker, won State Homemaker of Tomorrow for 1965. She will tour Williamsburg, Washington, and New York with other state winners, earning a 1500 scholarship and Britannica set for her school.

Darnell Sister Rites Held in Edgewood

The sister of Mrs. Will Darnell, 81, of Edgewood died Tuesday at Hillsboro Hospital after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Newman Brothers Funeral Home in Edgewood, with Rev. Donald R. Box and Rev. Thomas Davis officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery, Van Zandt County. Surviving are a son Harden Board of Mineola, another son Edward Board of Texas City, a daughter Mrs. A Lee Youngblood of Hillsboro, a brother I T James of Edgewood, two sisters CW Epps of Mineola and Mrs. Henrietta Darnell of Grand Saline, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

Junior High Boys Win Eighth In A Row

The Mineola Junior High boys extended their streak to eight straight with a 29 am win over Lindale. Glen Neal led scoring with 14 points as the undefeated team dominated district play. Joe Williams scored 20 to lift the Junior Highs to the Mineola tournament crown with a 38 32 victory over Quitman. Lindale took third by beating Alba-Golden 48 28. Lynn Morris scored 17 for Lindale and Jimmy Chaney had 13 for Alba-Golden. White Oak defeated Van 55 28 for the consolation. The all tournament team included Williams Mor Chaney Manley and Herron.

County Fair Adds Old Fiddlers Contest for 1965

Chelan Brenton, presiding of the Van Zande County Fair Association, announced a new event for the 1965 fair an Old Fiddlers Contest and talent show on Monday night August 15 with details to follow The annual queen contest will be staged the following night August 17 in Van with local residents in charge The fair runs Thursday August 19 through Saturday night August 21 with a rodeo feature night listed as well

Grand Saline Riding Club Plans 65 Rodeo And Parades

Kenneth Berry, president, announces Grand Saline Riding Club is stage of a major 1965 rodeo. The event runs Thursday through Saturday, June 3-5, with downtown parades and participation from nearby riding clubs and horses. Rodeo producer Ratjen returns to supply top stock and acts for the three-night show.

Van People Overcome By Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Several Van residents suffered carbon monoxide exposure while at the Van Masonic Lodge on Monday night. One person was treated at Medical Center Hospital in Tyler after attending a dinner for the Colfax Lodge of the Order of the Eastern Star. The gas source remains undetermined and victims recovered after treatment.

Services Held for Mrs. G. B. Carter

Funeral services were held Monday February 8 for Mrs. G B Carter 81 at First Methodist Church in Grand Saline with Reverends Tom Price Otis Sutton and E C Carter officiating. Entombment followed at Restland Memorial Cemetery Dallas under Grand Saline Funeral Home. Survivors include husband Rev G B Carter son Charles of Grand Saline and daughters Eula Mae Smith Kathryn Griswold and H D Meadows eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Pallbearers were W B Moore Kenneth Tidwell Hubert Take Perry Pugh Ray Watts and George Jones.

New Permit Office Opens In Canton

A new permit office opens in Canton beside the State Highway Department office. Highway resident engineer Mr Shaw of Van Zandt County says the office is located one mile east of Canton on Highway 64 and will regulate moving trailers under certain stated restrictions.

Two Prisoners Escape Canton Jail At Large

Two inmates fled Canton County Jail during the day, using a smuggled revolver and tearing telephones and radios to block pursuit. Jerry Norwood Gillingham and Daughtry slipped away on the jail’s fourth floor, prompting a statewide manhunt led by Sheriff Ward as investigators chase ties to California plates and recent burglaries in Wills Point.

Wormer Grand Saline Resident Dies In Car Accident

Wormer Grand Saline resident Marvin cape McCallister 2, manager of Briarwood Country Club Tyler, fatally injured in a rain slick crash south of Lindale. A Tyler lumber truck jackknifed into his car while passenger Joye McCallister was seriously injured. Driver Elvis Allen escaped injury. DPS cited rain and brake action as factors. this marked his second crash in six months. McCallister was a former Mineola Baptist Church member.

General Motors Previews of Progress show will appear at Grand Saline High School on February 19, 1965 at 10:00 am. The event features sun powered cars like Sunmobile, a fuel cell demo, and guidance system exhibits. Pvt. Cloyce Lynn Green and Elisabeth Green were killed in a plane crash near Oakgrove airport.
