Local notables visit Grand Saline and area residents

Ed Smith formerly of Grand Saline, now in Dallas, visited Tuesday. Mrs. Sam Wilson visited The Sun Office after reading about her son Julian Wilson in The Sun and discussed Grand Saline benefiting from its Highway 80 opportunity. Rev. A D Lemons, district superintendent, spoke at the Methodist church that morning.

Boxers Shine In Golden Gloves Ty er Tourney Finals

Four Grand Sa line fighters entered the Goldie Gloves at Tyler with two reaching finals Friday night. Eugene Bates lost in the semi finals after a second round nose bleed halted his match. Gary Red White fell in a semi final split decision to Ronnie Pyron of Tyler. Mel Roy Fox won the Novice Bantamweight title again, edging Billy Roberts of Arp on a split decision. Genn Speedy Cunniff claimed the Novice Heavyweight crown with first round knockouts in both rounds. Ellis Kirby undergoes a seven hour operation at Baylor Hospital Dallas. The quartet combined for six victories, two losses, three knockouts and one technical KO.

Gilmore Rites Outline Terrell Area Obituary Details

Gilmore born September 7, 1879 in Hartsville Tennessee moved to Texas as a youth. He spent most of his life in Dallas County owning a shoe business on St Paul Street in the Dallas Athletic Club building. Retiring, he lived on a Grand Saline farm. Survived by Mrs Stallines and brothers Sam W and J H Gilmore of Tallas. Pallbearers named from Terrell and nearby communities.

Weather Record Sketches a Cold, Wet Year in Grand Saline

Rainfall varied with 1955 at 32 inches below the 38-inch average while August trapped 838 inches of rain. No precip in October and November, a rare gap. Friedline notes 1931 as the driest year with 1.5 inches and 1945 as the wettest on record with 65 inches. Late March, on the 26th and 27th, the thermometer hit 22 and 24 degrees causing damage to fruit trees and vegetables.

Auction Barn Comments Weekly sale of cattle hogs and more

Auction barn reports a Tuesday sale offering 485 head of cattle across classes and 145 hogs sold. Prices ranged from butcher cows 10 to 13 dollars, fat calves 16 to 19.50, stocker cows 10 to 12.50, stocker calves 15 to 17.50, bulls 10 to 14, and cow calf pairs 90 to 155 dollars.
