Saline scene and riding club meet rescheduled

The Sports Booster Club schedules a meeting for Monday February 11 at 7 30 p m. Mrs Chester Higginbotham urges all members to attend. The Grand Saline Riding Club moves its Tuesday night gathering to Monday at 7 30 p m at the city jail with directors meeting at 7 p m. The Van Zandt County Cancer Crusade begins April 2 aiming for 600 with coordinators needed across the county.

Grand Saline Seeks to Form Boy Scout Troop

Local leaders urge community help to organize a Boy Scout troop in Grand Saline. Ray Rucker says no troop exists now and a meeting for interested adults will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the First Methodist Church. Citizens and parents are urged to attend.

Brady Gentry Roadside Park To Be Enlarged

Texas Highway Commission awarded a January contract for enlarging Brady Gentry Roadside Park in Van Zandt County Tyler area. Athens Lumber & Supply Co. won a $297071.71 bid to install two comfort stations sewage disposal system water line arbor units and area illumination on Interstate 202.5 miles west of Van. Sidney C. Cox Canton and W. W. Potter district engineer oversee the project expected to take about 120 working days.

County Commissioners Accept Bid For Curb In Ben Wheeler

The county commissioners accepted a curb and gutter bid for Ben Wheeler at 3.00 per linear foot from L. E. Curry of Canton. The 2500 foot project on the south side of Ben Wheeler was the meeting's highlight. The court discussed bidding for a 1974 motor grader and announced ads in the Edgewood Enterprise. County Judge Billy Hallum plans to attend a state judges and commissioners convention, with attendance by others undecided.

Howell and Hullum vie for Van Zandt County judge post

In Van Zandt County the Democratic primary on May 4 features a county judge race between Alvin Howell of Canton and incumbent Billy D. Hullum. Howell and Hullum previously contended in 1972 with Hullum winning narrowly. District 11 state representative race also draws interest with incumbent Bill Hollowell and Don Payne, both from Van Zandt County. Precinct 4 commissioner attracts five candidates, precinct 2 has four, and several justice of the peace races exist in precincts 4 6 and 1. Incumbents in many county offices run unopposed. U.S. Rep. from District 4 and State Senator from District 2 are both unopposed in re-election bids.

Redbud Project mobilizes Grand Saline beautification effort

Grand Saline urges citizens to buy redbud trees for planting at select sites. Trees four to five feet tall cost $2 each and will be planted by a school horticulture class under Donnie Fisher. Purchases support street beautification from North Main to Highway 80 and town entrances.

Amtrak to Add St Louis to Laredo Route via Grand Saline

Amtrak announces a new St Louis to Laredo rail passenger service starting March 13 with stops at Little Rock Texarkana Marshall Longview Dallas Fort Worth Austin San Antonio and Laredo. The thrice weekly trains run northbound from St Louis on Sunday Wednesday Friday and southbound from Laredo on Sunday Tuesday Friday. The service will offer coaches sleeping dining lounge and baggage options with information available at the FHA county office.

Van Progress Begins Weekly Operations

The Van Progress, a new weekly newspaper for Van, started this week with Bill Woodall as managing editor and Mary Ann assisting. The paper, owned by Howard Publishing Co, will publish every Tuesday and mail the issue for Wednesday delivery, serving shoppers with ads and community news while offering office supplies and printing services.
