Oran Jackson, superintendent of Perry's Northeast Texas district, retired after 37 years. A dinner in Lufkin on Wednesday January 28 honored him with a plaque from President W. L. Atwell praising loyalty, selflessness, and leadership. Atwell noted Jackson's role in employing many young men.
The town reports progress on multiple site improvements including the Grand Saline Supermarket area and the old Morton Salt site. Perry Brothers veteran B B Jackson retires after 37 years, honored at a Sulphur Springs dinner. Wayne Landers named successor as district superintendent.
Mrs Florence Masterson announces her candidacy for Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 in Grand Saline Sun columns. She is 47, longtime resident, wife of Donald J Masterson, and mother of three with two grandchildren. She opposes Judge Willie Rodgers in the May 2 primary, pledging full-time service and fair, impartial leadership.
The Grand Saline Lions Club heard Sterling Hammond from Tyler outline Social Security basics including payments, cards, and how benefits may end. He urged everyone to carry a proper card and report name changes, and announced his Canton visits Fridays. The club’s next meeting on February 17 will feature Judge Billy Don Hallum on forming a county Chamber to attract new industries.
Corby Germany Hospital administrator Mr Richard Cordes says visiting hour rules will be strictly enforced. Visiting hours for patients are 10:00 to 11:00 a.m 2:00 to 4:00 p.m and 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Van Zandt County reports 96 percent of its 1969 savings bond goal with total sales of 106,852 dollars and December sales reaching 16,902 dollars. County chair C L Stanford notes progress toward an 820,000 dollar target as Texas counties surpass state goals. Nationwide 1969 bond sales reach 4.74 billion dollars, with 97 percent of goal achieved and Freedom Shares totaling 548 million dollars, up from 277 million the prior year.
Van Zandt County tomato growers saw a demonstration on the Multipot System on March 26 in Canton. Dana Sable of Multipot Company and Pete Ludyjan of Wisconsin described pot sizes from 2.5 to 100 square inches, soilless growing medium, and easy transplanting. Samples were given for trial as Florida and European growers report labor savings and efficient root development.
Legislative action across at least 38 states aligns state calendars with a 1968 federal act. Washington's Birthday Memorial Day Columbus Day and Veterans Day are observed on the Monday four-day weekends. Labor Day on the first Monday creates five three day holidays. DC coverage begins January 1 1971.
Four leaders from the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau will attend the Texas Farm Bureau Legislative Membership and President's conference February 11 and 12 in Waco at the Hilton Inn. E G Durgin C W Terry C O Pirtle and Ralph Liston from Canton and Wills Point will join state leaders for reports on membership and the program of work for 1970.
Alvin Howell of Canton announces his bid for Van Zandt County County Judge. A former district clerk, Howell seeks voter support ahead of the first primary on May 2, 1970, saying it has been his lifelong ambition to serve the county.
The Band Booster Club will hold its regular meeting Monday night at 7 30 in the Band Hall. All members are urged to attend. Mr and Mrs Billie Dee Davis of Henderson visited Mrs Ida Wheeler in the Corby Germany Hospital in Grand Saline Tuesday.
County Judge Billy D. Hallum and County Agent Todd Berry attend the 12th annual County Judge and Commissioners Conference in College Station February 5 to 5. Sponsored by the County Judges and Commissioners Association and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the event features keynote by Sen. Ralph Hall on the dynamic role of the court and a talk on environmental pollution by Dr. Walter Quebedeaux. A banquet with Secretary of State Martin Dies Jr. closes the gathering.
A meeting is planned Friday February 6 at 7 o clock in the Canton Court House to organize the Free State Gun Club. All interested in membership are invited. Also noted is a separate fact that producing one ton of steel requires 25 000 gallons of water five tons of air and 700 horsepower hours of electricity.
The day opened cloudy then sun breaks near Grand Saline as Punxsutawney Phil did not appear, so no shadow was seen and six more weeks of winter moods are argued. Flooding from a heavy Sunday rain left yards and roads waterlogged. Grand Saline recorded one and a half inches of rainfall.

The Tax Assessor-Collector announced 1970 motor vehicle license plates went on sale February 2. A large initial shipment covers passenger cars and various truck categories. renewal notices simplify purchases, with specific locations in Grand Saline Wills Point Edgewood Van and Ben Wheeler Edom areas. Plates must be affixed by April 1.
The Internal Revenue Service announced it has not arranged with banks or others to enable tax payments by credit card or other credit means. Taxpayers may use checks or negotiable instruments dishonored by banks, incurring penalties of 1 percent of the amount or at least $5, plus other penalties and interest.
