A series of soil sample test demonstrations will tour Van Zandt County led by county agent Todd W. Berry. The Grand Saline session will be at the Fort Persons' farm next Monday at 10 a.m. The program covers taking samples, sending them off, and using field kits to identify deficiencies.

Bridge Repaired After Fire Damage Between Colfax and Moore
An efficient crew led by Road Commissioner Bill Fisher completed repair and reconstruction of the Tracy Reese oil road bridge. The wooden bridge burned January 2 and now its 80 ft span is fully restored at an estimated cost of 1700 dollars. Mrs Weaver Dies In Tyler After Collision
Funeral services for Mrs Leong Weaver held at Mair Street Baptist Church with Rev G B Carter and Rev Harold Conatser officiating. She died Sunday in a Tyler hospital after being injured in an automobile collision December 7. She was born June 20 1859 in Hunt County and had lived in Van Zandt County for 31 years after moving from Commerce in 1927. Survivors include husband E F Weaver son Hayden Weaver Tulsa Oklahoma daughter Marylee Weaver Grand Saline two brothers Robert Pratt Commerce James Pratt Greenville four sisters Edith Gant Lela Harrington both of Commerce Emma Berry Dallas and Elin Chancellor Chandler Oklahoma five grandchildren. The Grand Saline Chapter of the FVA held its annual Father and Son banquet on January 29 at the Elementary School Cafeteria. Attended by 114 people including future farmers, their dads, the School Board, and guests, the event featured a chicken dinner, entertainment, and several awards. Sherry Fisher received an FFA jacket as Chapter Sweetheart, with honors given to Herman Burges for farm electricity, Don Griffin for dairying, Paul Sellers for mechanics, and Ray Woodall for public speaking. Edward Mailey claimed both Chapter Farmer and soil and water awards. A girls’ trio of Annette Kirby, Brenda Clark, and Mary Lou Adkins performed with Luellen Persons at the piano, plus guitar numbers by Donald Pierce and the FFA band.

Carroll Swearingen, assistant manager of the Sabine River Authority, reports the Iron Bridge Lake project on Highway 35 is about 30 percent complete. Eighty percent of concrete slab approaches and 60 percent of concrete piers are poured with work on schedule.
