Grand Saline school trustees approved one year extensions for coaches Shirley Anderson and Hulan Smith at a Monday meeting. Anderson becomes head football and track coach while Smith leads basketball and baseball and assists with the A football, IB, and junior high teams. Two principals Clyde Holder and E R Slagle received two year extension.

Dallas Man Dies in Highway Crash Near Grand Saline
A head on collision on Highway 80 west of Grand Saline left Axel Lawrence Ostrand 69 dead and three others critically injured. Victims include Sam Smilowitz his wife and their 11 year old son with two broken legs and a knee cap fracture. The Smilowitz family was bound for California. their uninjured son stays with local residents.

Deputy Sheriff Pat Heddin of Edgewood was no-billed by the County Grand Jury after investigating the shooting of W. L. Garner. Three Wills Point men aged 17 to 19 were arrested after rustling cattle in the county. W R Seale Billy Lantrip and Dale Powers were taken while penning a cow and calf for Dyde Manning. Seale and Lantrip also face charges for stealing two cows from Sam Gandy in Martins Mill. Confessions were signed, according to County Attorney Joe Tunnell.

A work train derailed Tuesday around noon on the passing track near the Gulf Oil Co. warehouse when a defective switch caused the engine and three cars to derail. The track buckled across the main TP line, blocking service for about an hour before repairs. Fort Worth equipment helped reset the diesel engine the next day.

Mrs Harold Land was elected president of the Grand Saline Study Club for 1954.
