Grand Saline reports over 1500 raised for the March of Dimes with 700 from the Mother's March. Minstrel night yielded 168 in receipts, featuring Mayberry, Oxford, Martin, Eiland, Scott, Rash, Williams, Blakely and Hooker. Additional acts included majorettes, choir, square dancers, jazz band, and Rev. Moody's pantomime.

Kenneth Lee Newson Rites Held At Creagleville

Funeral services for Kenneth Lee Nelson 55 were held at Creagleville Methodist Church with Herman Russell officiating. He died Tuesday in a Douglas Arizona hospital from injuries from a one vehicle crash near that city. Nelson a World War II veteran is survived by three daughters a son two brothers a sister and three grandchildren. Interment followed at Creagleville Cemetery under Bartley Funeral Home direction.

Funeral services were held at the Creagleville church for Ralph Alonzo Gregory, 14, who died last Thursday at his home on Route 1 Fruitvale from undetermined causes. He is survived by his mother Florence Sallings, his father Ralph Gregory, three brothers Ronald Swearingen Dallas William Gregory Richard Gregory Fruitvale, four sisters Karen Miller Dallas Kathryn Florence and Rachel Gregory Fruitvale, and grandparents Alonzo Gregory Blithe California and Will Deggs Dallas.

Mrs. Ora Engle rites held at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church

Funeral services for Mrs. Ora Brummett Engle were conducted at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. W. H. Hassell and Rev. L. R. Ward officiating. She died Sunday in St. Paul Hospital Dallas after a long illness. Born December 7, 1892 in Quitman, she lived in Grand Saline most of her life and was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. She married John Thomas Engle on May 18, 1914. Burial was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Survivors include four daughters, two sons, two sisters, two brothers, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hollowell Named Chairman of State Affairs in Texas Legislature

State Representative Bill Hollowell of Grand Saline was named chairman of the State Affairs Committee in the 57th Texas Legislature and was also assigned to the Appropriations Committee. Rep. George Hinson of Mineola was named chairman of the Common Carriers Committee and vice-chairman of the Revenue and Taxation Committee with a seat on Appropriations. East Texas legislators highlighted in the announcements, signaling a stronger regional voice.

William T. Hale Buried At Oakland Monday Afternoon

Funeral services for William Thomas Hale 87 were held at Grand Saline Funeral Home Chapel Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. C. B. Cason officiated. Hale died in Dallas after a long illness. He was a Mississippi native, long-time Van Zandt County resident, and a retired farmer. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, three daughters, three sons, a sister, 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Highway Listed As Cause Of Accident

An accident 34 miles west of Grand Saline on US 80 occurred about 6:45 p.m. Friday when a small foreign built car driven by Gaynelle Morgan of Minden Louisiana lost control on the icy road. The car hit a railroad embankment and rolled twice but the driver and another occupant were not seriously injured and received treatment at Corsicana Hospital.

The Van Zandt County Scottish Rite Association installed new officers at the Service Cafe in Canton on Tuesday evening. Homer Williams of Grand Saline was elected president, with Leland Exell of Wills Point as outgoing president.
