Dry summers reduce hay and push winter pasture planning. Plant in mid September on well drained, accessible fields with proper seedbed. Drill seed on prepared beds. broadcast if needed, then roll. Choose rye for early growth and cold tolerance, mix with wheat or rye to balance risk, add ryegrass for extended spring grazing. Apply lime and soil nutrients based on tests, then graft 50 50 100 fertilizer if no test. Use rotational grazing, avoid grazing before 6 8 inches tall, stretch forage with short rotations, and manage grazing during freeze and icy conditions. Maintain minimum seeding rates 100 lb small grain and 20 lb rye per acre, adjust mixtures to 120 lb total per acre with ryegrass.
