Archangel, Sept 18. Bolshevik forces attacked American outpost south of Archangel. Eight Bolshevik dead found in a heap, three more near a frontier. Wounded Bolshevik claims a shell from a Russian Allied armored train killed twenty. Bolshevik artillery shelled positions but caused no harm. Trench fighting plus forest cover along the railroad.
Geneva dispatch reports the Rhenish Westphalian Gazette declaring Austrian peace notes have multiple motives but are rejected unanimously. The Allied stance is sincere, not bluff, and peace offers come from Austria only when enemies recognize the serious Allied position.
Cardinal John M. Farley archbishop of New York was buried beneath St Patrick’s Cathedral after a pontifical requiem mass. The ceremony, led by apostolic delegate Monsignor Bona, drew three surviving North American cardinals, Catholic dignitaries nationwide, city and state officials, and members of the American military and naval forces. The cathedral was crowded as Bishop Hickey delivered the sermon amid prayers and tribute.

Wisconsin state banks report total resources of 353,577,993.84 on August 31, up from 329,821,377.90 a year earlier and 345,352,394.40 on June 29. Deputy Commissioner A. E. Emergon says banks are in good shape to support the Liberty Loan drive as figures show a gain of 8,603,612.44 in United States certificates of indebtedness and increases in deposits and time deposits over the past three months.
Washington Sept 24 A diplomat from France testified before the senate praising Vivian and Joffre for welcoming America to the liberty defense and stating that the nations fighting Germany feel they are moving toward the evening of Der Tag when Germany’s power for evil will be crushed.
In a telegraph to Ambassador Jusserand Vice President Marshall expresses unwavering American devotion to France and readiness to continue the war alongside French forces until all wrongs are avenged. He recalls shared sacrifice since 1776 and urges unity against aggression as the world endures one of its grandest periods.
Washington reports 13 ships completed and delivered to the emergency fleet in the week ending September 20. The fleet consisted of all steel vessels of about 1 400 tons capacity and seven wooden and composite ships.
