Washington May 1 officials released the registration method for the selective draft. Governors oversee local registration with sheriffs mayors and designated officers naming registrars, volunteers urged to staff precincts with no pay. The federal role remains supervisory via provost marshal general.
Rio Janeiro May 5 The government orders German minister Adolf Paull to continue his trip to Uruguay after receiving a cablegram from Brasilian minister to Germany. Paull had been detained on reports that Germany was withholding Brazilian passports.
Secretary Baker appoints Raymond B. Fosdick of New York as chairman of a nine member advisory committee to consult on measuring moral hazard in army camps amid mobilization. John R. Mott of the International Y M C A is among the other eight members.
Washington May 5 Prevailing retail prices of anthracite coal are unwarranted and the supply for next season is adequate the federal trade commission stated today in a preliminary report based on a partially completed investigation ordered by Congress last winter The commission warns consumers against buying larger quantities of coal than usual this summer The commission promises to scourge any scrupulous dealer who seeks to mislead the public into believing exorbitant prices are justifiable or that there is any necessity to bid frenziedly for immediate delivery for far future needs.

He cites a fundamental shift in demand, industrial slowdown, and rapid labor reallocation as essential restrictions affect both rich and poor, with high income taxes on the wealthy and rising wages and rationed support benefiting the lower classes, plus 200000 women entering industry.

President Wilson occupied a seat in the executive gallery during British Foreign Minister Lord Balfour's remarks in the House. Balfour warned that militarism threatens Western civilization and praised Allied unity. Wilson applauded, removed gloves, and joined in the handclapping during the speech.
London, May 6. The admiralty reports the loss of a torpedo boat destroyer after hitting a mine on May 2 in the English Channel. It says probably one officer and 61 men were lost. The vessel sank with all hands.
New York decision by Surrogate Cohalan dismisses contest by distant relatives and assigns the bulk of Jessie Gillender's $2,000,000 estate to the Paulist Fathers. Remaining bequests go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Johns Hopkins University.
London May 6 Prince Edward Ubert of Wales heir apparent to the British throne will ask for the hand of Princess Maud youngest daughter of the Prince’s Royal and sister to Prince Arthur of Connaught The report contradicts earlier gossip that he sought Princess Yolanda daughter of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy The piece notes talk of revived royal marriage customs amid political upheaval in Europe.
