Verdicts Of Guilty In First Three Liquor Cases
Verdicts of guilty were rendered in the first three liquor cases heard before Judge K M Landis in the United States Court at Lacrosse Wisconsin. Tony Varda was found guilty of transporting liquor and possessing liquor in violation of the prohibition act for the Milwaukee to Hurley run in which John Cappacio was killed while resisting officers. Nicholas Nedemowitch of Baraboo was found guilty of possessing moonshine liquor and raisin mash. Joseph Nedemowitch, his brother, was killed by a Prohibition Agent after charging at the agent with an axe amid demolished liquor jars. Pierre Carlos of Tremont County was found guilty of having five barrels of raisin mash and a case of moonshine in his house. Teo De Mars George Smith and Albert La Hare of Ashland were on trial for transporting moonshine from Washburn to Ashland. An automobile tied to the case was seized. Judge Landis will not sentence the convicted men until the closing day of the term. Following the convictions the defendants indicated a wish to change pleas to gulls.
