John J. Densmore has been named head of a new labor division overseeing mobilization labor issues for ship and munitions plants. The division expands the United States Employment Service and previously served as a labor department solicitor.
United States livestock on January 1 valued at 8.269 billion dollars, up 1.628 billion from a year earlier. Horses, mules, cows, other cattle, sheep, and swine show substantial increases with mares at over 21.5 million, cattle over 27 million, and swine near 55 million head.
Austria's food minister Herr Hoefer told Neue Wiener Tageblatt that Austria is absolutely dependent on Hungary and Romania for grain. He noted that since last August only 150000 tons of wheat arrived from Romania, while Hungarian shipments were inadequate to meet current needs.

St. Paul Minn Feb 1 Joseph Gilbert manager of the Nonpartizan league was arrested today on a warrant charging obstructing enlistments tied to a Kenyon Minn speech on August 8 1917. The warrant by Dr J A Gates former legislator says Gilbert declared America is only pulling England s chestnuts out of the fire. Gilbert posted 500 bail to appear in Goodhue county court in March.
President Wilson summoned a dozen Republican and Democratic senators to the White House for a two hour conference. He reiterated opposition to bills creating a super war cabinet and a director of munitions, arguing they would hamper wartime conduct and are unnecessary. Senators said they discussed military bills and would await a White House announcement.
