Washington reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics began a cost of living inquiry in Baltimore to gather family expenditures on food clothing housing fuel furniture and other costs. Data will aid wage adjustments and inform households about what money buys.
Washington reports that General Pershing announced the conferring of the Distinguished Service Cross on 23 officers and men for acts of bravery on the Marne. Four recipients died. living awardees include Lt Col Frank H. Adams and Major Geo F Rozelle among others. Posthumous honorees are Lieutenants Charles Chapman and Leonard C. Hoskins and Sergeants Arthur F Ware and Raymond P Cronin.
Washington Aug 20 The American army uses 1 250 000 pounds of butter and 700 000 pounds of oleo margarine each month A war department report says soldiers in the United States have about five times more butter than oleomargarine while in France butter and oleomargarine quantities are about equal due to difficulty obtaining high grade butter
Killed in action are Albert O'Roker Nooney and D. W. severely. Corporal Charles George Zalnaky from Willow River Minn and Private Bror Oiaf Hyjelin from Cambridge Minn listed by disease or other causes.
Washington dispatches report a Chinese force massing at the border to deter a threatened invasion. In a separate item, the Proteus steamer was diverted near Cape Hatteras as naval officials provided updates. a British captain captured by a submarine near Nantucket is also noted amid war coverage.
British repulsed four attacks near Chilly six miles north of Rouen and captured 183 prisoners in a successful raid near Vieux-Berquin Outtersteen. French troops near Mornain occupied Vassens with reciprocal fire. German bombardment of Nancy reported with civilian casualties. American forces repelled a German raid north of Toul with no losses to the U S forces.
London reports a daytime advance of about a mile as French and allied forces push along the line from Le Pravim farm through Fresnieres Arte des Orval Hamel toward Drealfpoonrt and the valley near Lamigny. The battle line extends six miles from Neyou with activities around Matz and the Oise.
Official report from the War Department in Washington to Sergi HR J. Martell states the enlistment age for skilled army jobs now ranges from 46 to 56. An order to halt enlistments and discharge those on hand was issued, with exemptions for specialized roles after authorization. Washington dispatch reports provost marshal general revised the register figures for young men to be called for likely military service next Saturday.
