Government study urges federal seizure of key meat industry assets to restore competition. Commission says five packing firms misuse power to manipulate markets and restrain supplies, proposing government ownership of rail stockyards refrigerating cars and central markets to ensure fair pricing and open access.
LaCrosse Wis Aug 8 a strong storm of small tornado proportions bridged the city between the north and south sides snapping telephone poles and trees and crippling streetcar and telegraph service for hours. Roofs were blown from buildings and boats pulled from the river caused damage but no deaths or injuries reported. Heavy hail and rain accompanied the event.
London Aug 8 Premier Lloyd George delivered an exhaustive war review in the house of commons. He spoke frankly about the world struggle, touched on all major points, and said the Allied outlook brightened as hopes of conquest faded, enabling Parliament to adjourn for a hopeful holiday week.
Telegraphic briefs report Secretary McAdoo endorsed an 80 percent war profile tax in a message to Representative Kitchin. A wooden cross marks the grave near Chamery east of Fere-en-Tardenois for Lieutenant Roosevelt, reportedly buried by Germans after disappearing in an air combat on July 17. German papers had claimed the burial. the grave was found by an American aviator with the inscription in English.
