The Leader offers terms of subscription at two dollars for one year or one dollar for six months. Advertising rates list one inch first insertion at one dollar and each additional insertion at six and a half cents.
The piece notes California papers labeling the land boom as wind and a land agents scheme with a collapse expected soon. It also reports President Cleveland inviting Wm. B. Putnam and James B. Angell to join the State Secretary in fisheries talks with Britain, and flattering receptions promising a return to office. The Grand Army committee defeats Vandervoort’s resolution censuring the President for vetoing the Independent Pension bill, 318 to 175.
A man living near Farmer and his nine or ten year old son camped by Rock Creek south of Whitt. Both fell into an old 60 to 70 foot well in darkness. The man broke a leg, the boy suffered a minor head cut, and both were held above water by the father for about thirteen hours. A snake was found in the well before James Ham and others pulled them out and to Whitt for care. The well has since been filled in.
Heavy rains flood Texas rail lines causing widespread damage. The Santa Fe bridge over Red River at Gainesville is seriously damaged. Wichita reports bridge over Pease River washed away, 600 feet of trestle gone, and nine cars of steel rails buried in the river bed. The Wichita River rises above its ten year high.
A rural teacher described as not commonly a strapping fellow appears in a brief passage. The line hints at a rustic educator with modest physical presence, contrasted with expectations of robustness in traditional rural life.
A crowd greeted the President and Mrs. with cheers and fireworks as banners and gaslit streets framed the route. Mounted police opened the way through a packed city, while transparencies of Grant Lincoln and the President marked the approach to Mayor Francis’s home.
A Philadelphia girl at a private boarding school despondent since fall term hid morphine doses in a ink bottle and used a hypodermic needle through a stylographic pen. Nurses found 128 half grain doses and scars along her arm. A New York society woman is blamed for teaching the habit, prompting parents to teach abstinence as a moral duty.
General Butler told a Kansas City reporter that as a young man he faced a question about a Pacific coast journey. He said he did not know the states and territories to cross from New York, so he wrote none, and proposed going around Cape Horn. The anecdote is noted as a crown jewel of bump consistency.
The county report lists owned horses and mares with physical details and branding. Chestnut sorrel, brown, bay mare, and gray mare described by height, age, and brands, with owners or caretakers named as A. T. Bass, W. D. Bellamy, Rock Wright, J. M. Patterson, and J. M. Patterson at Belknap, dated Sept. 21–23, 1887.
