Evangelist Vawter and Miss Reaves lead Graham church meetings with strong attendance and moving solos. Sermons on faith repentance and growth in grace attract residents as plans target a record Sunday School turnout and a Sunday mass meeting.
W R Barnett of Bowers Barber Shop was robbed of fifty six dollars last Saturday night near the Teachers Dormitory in East Graham. He was accosted by a man identified as Wells who was arrested and charged with the offense. Graham police note little high jacking for some time.
The Philathea Class of the Baptist church elected officers at a recent meet. Beulah Allen was chosen president with H. E. Griffin as teacher and R. V. Tidwell as first vice president and Enlargement Committee chair. Blair became second vice president and Social Committee chair. Sallie Timmons is third vice president and Personal Service Committee chair. Myrtle Kemp is recording secretary, Kate Fields is corresponding secretary, and Una Adams is press reporter.
The Gooseneck bridge across the Brazos River lost its south spans last Friday morning while the north span remained intact. The bridge collapse paralyzed the Bunger and Hewron City pools and prompted action from the Commissioners' Court, the Graham Chamber of Commerce, and supply houses to replace the bridge quickly with a temporary structure expected to be usable within four weeks.
A large crowd gathered at the Graham courthouse for a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Speakers praised yearlong efforts, discussed a Brazos River bridge at Gooseneck, road and oil field investments, and plans for a modern union passenger station.
The Court of Criminal Appeals discharged H D Miller Wallace Martin and Jim Jennings who were held in contempt for refusing to answer grand jury questions about the Ku Klux Klan. They were fined and jailed until they could respond. The court ruled the grand jury had no right to question without a bona fide criminal matter and that the Klan questions were not pertinent to any instant offense.
Local observer C W Johnson Sr reports April rainfall of 5.91 inches. He notes years when rainfall above four inches correlated with fair crops, listing 1905 4.15 inches 1908 6.85 inches 1914 6.41 inches 1915 8.85 inches 1916 4.90 inches. All years since 1905 except these had less than four inches. Prospects for moisture look favorable, though sunshine is needed to finish planting.
Wichita Falls politician Orville Bullington campaigns for Congress in the 18th district. A correction notes he will address Graham voters on Wednesday May 10 at 8 p m at the Graham court house rather than May 11 as advertised.
Mrs. A. T. Barrett and her children from Austin arrived this week to live in Graham. Mr. Barrett serves as office manager for Ranger Gas Company and has been in Graham several months. Graham welcomes the family.
Last Friday morning bridge on Bunger road failed and citizens met that afternoon to plan relief. Local residents and oil operators subscribed funds and reached an agreement with the Commissioners Court to open a temporary bridge for traffic by the 15th of next month.
Southern Young county draws oil operators with multiple horizons in Strawn sands. South Bend and Bunger districts report production from several depths, led by a 50 000 barrel Roark well south of Graham producing over 2000 barrels daily. Numerous leases, rigs, and tests cover Gowen, Herron, Costello, and Oil City districts with high gravity oil and gasoline content driving rapid development.
The Leader admits a price error in last week's Birdsong advert on the back page. A 32 inch tissue and imported gingham was misquoted at 29 cents but should have been 69 cents. The paper regrets the mistake and notes Birdsong’s ongoing bargains.
The senior pupils of Mrs John B B Wood will present a recital at the school auditorium Friday night May 5. Mrs Wood organizes engaging programs and invites everyone to attend the performance.
A young child of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Walker suffered facial burns Tuesday when hot grease was accidentally thrown onto the child. No further details on condition or location are provided.
