First Young County Court and Early Frontiersmen

The 1856 Young County court convened in Belknap with Chief Justice Peter Harmonson and a small body of commissioners. Early difficulties included lack of funds, no treasury, and judges traveling from Dallas. The court laid out Belknap, saw the first district court and grand jury, and admitted Joseph Woolfolk to the bar. A notable case granted Rachel and Anatcha freedom to Major George H. Thomas. The six day grand jury returned 65 indictments ranging from murder to gambling as frontier courts struggled to function with scarce resources.
