Stone Mountain Memorial Conception and Early Plans
A 1915 editorial sparked a project to carve a Confederate memorial on Stone Mountain Georgia. Widow of a Confederate officer funded efforts to consult sculptor Gutzon Borglum who proposed a 1350 foot panorama with sixty five generals and a 165 foot Robert E Lee figure. Funds were raised in Atlanta starting April 1923 and Southern governors approved the campaign on April 20 1923. Work began June 18 1928. The plan includes a memorial hall and an amphitheater with a total estimated cost of 3.5 million dollars, largely funded by Atlantans and other Southern supporters.
