Executive committee decision due to war scare hot weather and hard times. Outlay to ensure success would be excessive, though a majority reportedly favors a reunion next year if conditions improve.
Mr. and Mrs. Willie Riggs and Mrs. O. M. Woods spent Tuesday evening on an outing on the Brazos river near Gooseneck and reported cotton looking extremely well out there.
Glyde Hadden twenty one, a Graham Mill and Elevator Co employee at Megargel, was seriously hurt yesterday evening when his left arm was drawn into shaft gearing. He was brought to the sanatorium this morning with a badly shattered bone and flesh torn from the arm between elbow and shoulder. He rests under a nurse's care and his physician hopes to save the arm though usefulness is doubtful.
Sunday July 15 is designated Red Cross Day by the local Red Cross Auxiliary. It is to be observed in all churches with morning services and Red Cross sermons on the work and needs of the Red Cross.
Miss Nora Oatman elected secretary treasurer of the State convention of organized Sunday schools at Palacios last week. A former Young County girl, her friends here and elsewhere applaud her popularity at home and abroad.
W S MeJdimsey added a concrete sidewalk in front of his building on the north side of the square. John La mar was the artist on the project. The week brought hot weather with a scorching Tuesday night following the season’s hottest day. B B Garrett returns to the steels after a two week illness.
I B Padgett to manage the Farmers Union Gin for the coming season as modern equipment replaces older lines. A C Anderson moved his gin setup from Finis to the od cotton yard near the mill and elevator to prepare for ginning. The late cotton crop and strong prices promise a busy season with two gins likely at full capacity. Drilling plans also advance as Empire Gas and Oil Co prepares to begin operations by August 1 using derrick supplies and casing from O D Lisle's place eleven miles southeast of Graham.
During a hot Tuesday the afternoon Surgical Dressings class received a refreshing surprise from Mrs. Howard. She served ice cold grape juice to each member at her nearby Ice Cream Parlor, and the class praised her generosity as a big contribution to their efforts.
The Young County Singing Convention is deferred due to many protracted county meetings. Bb. F. Rogers, President, and H. L. Groner, Secretary, announce the change to the fourth Sunday in October.
A 16 year old son of J. H. Williams near Eliasville fell 35 feet into a well while cleaning it. Poisonous gas produced by the situation caused him to collapse after reaching the surface. A second youth was lowered into the well to assist and the boy was revived on extraction with no apparent injuries.
Henry Williams, once county sheriff, now serves as Newcastle postmaster, greeting former colleagues and friends during a Tuesday visit in town.
The State of Texas vs C McGee for failing to dip cattle for tick eradication was heard last week and Saturday with a guilty verdict. The case had prior trials and an appeal which was reversed, leading to a new trial with the same outcome. The case against J S Munsey for the same offense was continued to the October term.
The Farm Loan Association will hold a meeting in Olney on Saturday at 2 p m at Judge Wood's office. All members and loan applicants are required to attend. R E Hill serves as Chairman and Chas P Nanee as Secretary.
Graham's Big Chautauqua will be held September 20 21 and 22 with three days of top entertainment. The Radcliffe Co. supplied the program and promises first class talent. Tickets should be secured soon and residents urged to support the event.
Jno H Wood returns from Mineral Wells where he visited his brother James M Wood of Lakewood New Mexico. James is staying at the Wells seeking recovery from declining health and friends here hope for his restoration soon.
Mrs Mary Mayes Owens, formerly Miss Mary Mayes of Graham, died at her home in Sherman at 9 o'clock last night. She was married less than a year ago to Archie Owens, a Graham native. Funeral and interment were in Sherman at 5 o'clock this afternoon. The Leader extends heartfelt condolences to her relatives and friends.
C E Shipley, a longtime Newcastle resident and former Bridgeport migrant, died at home Monday evening after a lingering illness. He had worked in mines and as a blacksmith, lived at Loving, and left an aged wife and many grown children. He is mourned by numerous county friends.
Charlie Daniels from Newcastle visited Stephens County oil fields and stated the greatest field in the state is being developed there. He also expects oil and gas strikes in Young County within the next few months.
