A Historic Settlement of Cape Girardeau T
The first purely American settlement west of the Mississippi near Cape Girardeau traces to Ensign Girardot, a French trader and officer, with the town’s naming tied to him. Louis Lorimier, a French-Canadian settler, arrived in 1782 and, aided by a Shawnee wife, received a land grant in 1795 from the territorial governor. The Spanish era offered free lands to fill upper Louisiana. Cape Girardeau’s claim to being the first American settlement rests on settlers from Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina, with organization dating to 1906 and the founder later buried beside his Shawnee wife on a hill overlooking the Mississippi.
