Rosa Duff, a famed beauty turned cottage mother, faces ruined prospects as her past and present collide. Her mother Mrs Duff pushes strict class standards while Rosa contemplates marriage to Arthur Neil and a wealthy neighbor Victor Hunt, amid a pistol shock and a dramatic rescue by a gentleman named Jeff.
In the summer chapter Rosa Duff faces pressure from Arthur as she plans marriage to Victor. He pleads on the veranda and warns of ruin unless she recommits, while Rosa battles fear and sense of duty, hoping to avoid heartbreak and public scandal.
Rosa Duff writes to Arthur renouncing him after engagement to Victor. Arthur reappears, pursues Rosa, threatening and shooting, dragging her to a magistrate. Rosa hides under a house until rescuer guides her to safety as Arthur flees to a grim doom.
Rosa endures community scorn after her mother’s death while Victor Hunt forgives her, moves to New Orleans, and later dies. Rowena helps where she can, marrying in her village and remaining beloved. After many reverses, Rosa seeks aid at the Widow’s Home, aided in part by Rowena's benevolence despite ignorance of the widow’s poverty.
Rosa, driven by poverty after widowhood, seeks help from her sister Rowena. Rowena provides money for lodging while Rosa sustains five children, marrying again for pride and to repay gifts. Years pass, Rosa remains with hardship, rejects adoption offers, and endures fear of an ex-partner while warning her children through hard lessons, reflecting on remorse and fate.
A letter circulated to editors and officials requests information on men named John Alexander or Frank Alexander or Clay Alexander. The writer notes their father as Daniel T. Alexander and asks recipients to reply immediately to E. H. Clark in White Oak Hopkins County Texas.
A ridge over the Tay in England collapsed on the morning of the 26th, sending a train of about one hundred people into 80 feet of deep water. All passengers perished in the disaster.
