The Leader lists its office on Elm Street one block north of Public Square and notes entry at the Graham Post Office as second class matter.
A retrospective on the James family band of outlaws led by Jesse and Frank James. It traces their Missouri roots, notable robberies from Liberty to Northfield, hangings and lynchings, and the fate of each gang member as reported by Chicago Times and Inter Ocean sources.
Storms Tuesday and yesterday caused extensive flooding across Main and Murphy, with water up to six feet in the Herald basement and widespread roof and goods damage. Papers, liquor stock, and machinery suffered as engine delays hampered pumping. total losses may reach seven to ten thousand dollars for the Herald and six to seven thousand for Dr. E M Tillman.
John Calvert alias Calvert Wilson jailed by Deputy U S Marshal Nim Norton on charges of inciting letters to him under an assumed name to fraudulently use the mails. He lived near Eureka Navarro County and received mails at Corsicans and Bellville. He admits both names but claims Calvert as his real name. A preliminary hearing is set before U S Commissioner Burford in Dallas.
A traveler spoke of a salty stream in Stonewall County eighty miles northwest of Abilene where the water is so dense a man can float without effort and it takes effort to sink a limb. Pure salt lies in blocks along the creek bed, and two of Mr. Goodnight’s freight teams paused there to haul substantial salt into Abilene.
A Beaver Dam episode recounts a prank where a young man on a lecturer escort job is deceived by a corset dealer posing as Brigham Young's widow. The corset seller asks him to remove his coat and vest, provoking his alarm until it’s revealed the lecturer is a different woman.
The Statesman led with an editorial titled The Ten Commandments praising the proclamation of the new Moses who convened the legislature. The piece complains the mix of religion and politics is improper and suggests the alcalde should rebel against it.
A stout woman drags an urchin to a New York story paper office demanding to know if the shop promotes Indian wars, bushido outlaws, stagecoach robberies, and boy pirates. The clerk defends publishing for boys as she berates him with umbrella blows and threats.
Vindicated, W P Lips comb of this city was honorably acquitted in Tarrant county court of the theft accusation involving fifteen cents from Fort Worth employer L N Branswig. The Democrat Advance notes Branswig’s questionable character and Lips has filed a $10,000 defamation suit to recover damages for damaging his reputation.
