United Press report from Williamson West Virginia on May 14 notes renewed fighting in the Mingo mine war. By dawn the third day, six dead and many wounded are reported with casualties likely to rise as peace efforts fail and gunfire continues along the Tug River.
Paris reports the Upper Silesian dispute threatens a Poland Germany war and splits in the entente. Lloyd George's speech is seen as a warning that Britain will uphold Versailles in the region. French officials insist on transferring most industrial districts to Poland despite British opposition.
U S Senator Robert L Owen of Oklahoma filed a Supreme Court petition seeking removal of a receiver for 165 acres of land in the Red River bed. Owen says he bought the land from the government in 1913 and the case is advised by Attorney General Freeling.
United Press reports that President Harding and Secretary Weeks are weighing federal troop deployment to troubled West Virginia districts after a telegram from Governor Morrow of Kentucky sent full situational data with a troop request.
Grand jury indicted William F. Quesse and nine other Chicago Flat Janitors' Union leaders for conspiracy after an extended inquiry with over forty witnesses. Separately in Washington, Linn Gale, accused draft deserter, to face public court martial at Fort Sam Houston Texas under War Department orders.
Washington May 14 The Tindher wrain futures trading bill passed the House 269 to 69. It bans certain futures sales and unusual transactions and sets up contract markets under the Agriculture Secretary. It proceeds to the Senate.
Federal prohibition officer and local authorities raided a Bee Cave still near Austin yesterday. Fifty gallons of corn whiskey and five barrels of mash were dumped into the Colorado River. Two arrests were made in the case and the still was destroyed.
Hearings in the divorce case of James A. Stillman and Mrs. Stillman were tentatively postponed from May 18 and 19 to May 25 and 26, attorneys for Mrs. Stillman announced in New York.
London on May 14 United Press reports a new disguise trend among young women. Woolen wigs dyed vivid blue cerise green or purple replace hairpieces for fancy dress and masquerade looks. The wigs feature a straight fringe and lank sides reaching the neck, popular with the former boudoir cap crowd.
Fire department volunteers adopted a resolution thanking the Sanitary Market for a 25 contribution after aiding extinguishers at Gifford's Cafe on Elm Street. The meal by Mayor E S Graham is also acknowledged. Fire practice to begin June 1.
M. K. Graham announces a two story brick building with eleven rooms and a basement planned for Shawnee Park at Bragos and Cherry streets. A May 24 bond election seeks $65,000 to finance the project, with the park remaining usable as a playground.
Senator France of Maryland plans a Moscow trip to study conditions in Russia as part of a forthcoming senatorial investigation. He will sail soon with Department credentials, becoming the first such inquiry since the Russian revolution and will report unofficially to President Harding and Secretary Hughes on his return.
Mrs. Jake L. Hamon widow of a millionaire and politician is in nervous collapse under medical care. She has been ill since the trial of Clara Smith Hamon.
Mr. B. A. Faulkner and Miss Ruby Miller united in marriage at the Methodist Parsonage in Graham on Friday afternoon at 6 30 by Rev. T. E. Bowman. The bride, a Graham resident, has many friends. the groom works in the Bunger field south of Graham. The couple receives warm congratulations.
The Strand church invites attendance for Sunday school at 10 a m preaching at 11 a m and 8 p m with the Epworth League gathering at 7 30 p m The note thanks last Sunday's unusually large attendance and urges filling every seat with a hearty welcome from Pastor T E Bowman.
A meeting at the First National Bank on May 6 organized a Chautauqua Club by the White and Myers' Chautauqua guarantors and the Ladies of the C. L. S. C. The club elected officers including Mrs. R. E. Lynch as President and set plans for the Graham event scheduled June 18 to 22 with committees on tickets, administration, grounds, and correspondence.
The Graham Insurance Agency led by H F Rice relocated to the new Johnson Building on the square’s west side. The agency offers fire tornado automobile oil rig life health accident and workers compensation insurance and markets 18 major old line companies.
Huntsville Texas May 14 Ring leaders in the state penitentiary mutiny last Thursday were captured in woods fourteen miles west of here. The captured include G R Anderson Harris county Louis Dodd Burnett county C C Mimms Eastland county K A Stewart Tarrant county Arthur Spraggins Bexar county and H L Watson Denton county. They were found by bloodhounds and offered no resistance though they had guns. Anderson Dodd and Watson had said they would not be captured alive. The escapees had no food since fleeing. Of the 42 who escaped thirteen remain unaccounted for twenty three recaptured two killed and one surrendered.
Mrs Cecil Wasson daughter of Capitol Hotel owner arrived in Graham with her young daughter Elizabeth Ann to help run the new hotel. From Big Springs, she will work with her mother as manager while awaiting the expected June 1 public opening. Clerk Tom Costello of Ranger will assist Mrs Wasson. The hotel promises modern facilities for Graham.
Washington May 13 The Post Office Department states no attempt will be made to disturb first second and third class postmasters who are regularly appointed and confirmed by the Senate The ruling covers the term of appointment except for cause only Fourth class postmasters are unaffected Acting postmasters may continue in emergencies and petitions with recommendations are unnecessary until examinations build an eligible list by the Civil Service Commission.
Eddie Haug owner of Haug's Independent Airplane Company arrived by plane and urged Graham Chamber officials to host an air mail and passenger station. He said ten airplanes are under construction in Fort Worth and could service Fort Worth Graham South Bend Eliasville Ranger and Breckenridge if Graham builds a hangar and landing field.
Mrs Nora Howry wife of Dee Howry was buried Friday at 3 00 pm in Oak Grove Cemetery Rev T E Bowman conducted the funeral She was born March 20 1890 married February 21 1909 and had four children She is survived by her husband four children her mother seven sisters and two brothers She moved to Graham years ago and friends mourn her death caused by a virulent blood poisoning.
R Edgar Y Mullins of Louisville Kentucky former Texan and head of the Southern Baptist Ecumenical Seminary was chosen president of the Southern Baptist Convention in Chattanooga. He succeeds J B Gambrell of Dallas as several officers and secretaries were also elected as over 6000 messengers and visitors gathered.
Lydia Southard, called a feminine Blue Beard, faces murder charges for four husbands and a brother in law in Honolulu. She claims typhoid carried deaths and says doctors will prove typhoid caused the fatalities while maintaining her innocence.
A congressional speaker urges strict immigration laws citing rising immigrant figures since 1918. He warns of an immigrant tide, predicting up to two million arrivals in 1922, calls to halt entry until laws are rewritten, and emphasizes loyalty to the U.S. Constitution and flag.
County Superintendent H H Avants reports two elections today at Loving and Oakland to raise school tax rates from 50 cents to 1 dollar and 20 cents to 50 cents respectively. Next Saturday Jean and Rock Creek each consider tax hikes, plus a $3 000 Colston bond vote.
J. E. Smith pastor of the colored Methodist Episcopal church organized in Graham appeals to white residents to aid the construction of a new church. He reports $3555.50 already raised and $1150 more needed to complete the building and asks local pastors to collect offerings.
The County Commissioners' Court adjourned yesterday after approving and paying all bills following the contract for constructing a new jail building. Judge Reeves stated no other business of consequence was considered.
