John McNamara, imprisoned for the 1910 Los Angeles Times building dynamiting, was released Tuesday due to good behavior. His fifteen year term was reduced to ten years, authorities announced at San Quentin Penitentiary in California.
The Graham High School junior class presented its annual play to a large appreciative audience. Under Mrs Lois Manry’s direction the cast delivered polished performances with music and readings well received. The troupe featured Leonard Furman, Tootsies Woes husband, Gaston Hallam and many others in a spirited production titled Tootsies Woe.
Milton McConnell secretary of the Chamber of Commerce learns his father in law J McKay dies in Dallas at 77. He was born in Owensboro Kentucky and long led the Texas Lignite Operators Association and chaired the McKay Coal Company of Dallas.
Henry L. Farrell reports London skepticism as American amateurs and a possible Ouimet visit loom over British championships. British press downplays threat to domestic supremacy, citing Miss Alexi Sterling's poor showing and anxious chatter over a large amateur and professional American contingent.
Figures from South Bend field list Panhandle Refining Co as April’s leading producer with 67 840 barrels from seven wells. Godley Oil Co follows at 39 760 from six wells. Other producers include Seabord Oil & Gas 36 086 Mid-Texas Petroleum 30 650 Oklahoma Petroleum & Gasoline 27 728 Shamrock Oil & Gas 12 619 and South Bend Oil 7 330 plus Roxana Petroleum 5 490 and several smaller firms with volumes ranging from 4 787 down to 250 barrels.
The Graham school board unanimously re elected H B Cogdell as superintendent after a successful first year. The report from the State Department of Education praised Graham High School with 1000 students this year and a recommendation for more affiliation. A bond issue of 47500 will be voted soon to expand facilities including a household economic department.
Chicago reports a jealous suitor fired at two men talking with police. Andrew Knucky was shot and killed by Leo Sharpe who, with Frank Pennell, claimed Knucky was the wrong man in front of the girl's home after she had rejected him.
Hungry children crowded into Racine city hall seeking bread after rescue mission funds ran out. Officials considered relief options as the city treasurer used personal funds and sent the crowd to another charity.
Senator Harrison of Mississippi says President Harding accepted the Allies invitation for American representation in the supreme council and in effect adopted Wilson’s detailed plans.
The Strand Theatre hosts Methodist services tomorrow with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and preaching at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. by Pastor T. E. Bowman who hopes to fill the building for both services.
Governor Pat M. Neff designates Sunday May 8 1921 as Mothers Day urging Texans to honor mothers. He quotes Lincoln on maternal love and asks residents to write letters to mothers or the mother of a friend to strengthen the moral spirit and benevolence across the state. The proclamation is signed in Austin with the state seal and attested by Secretary S L Staples.
Paris May 7 The Council of Ambassadors directs the Allied Commission in Upper Silesia to tell the people the plebiscite will not influence the division of the district. The instruction emphasizes no change in planned borders despite the vote.
In Aris France on May 7 clashes occurred between communists and police over Ruhr district occupancy. Affected areas saw shootings and arrests including three radical leaders. Despite tension, the city remained quiet with enthusiasm for enforcing Allied terms.
The body of Wilma Ruth Johnson aged 19 who died here on May 5 was taken to Tuxedo yesterday for burial. She is the daughter of Mrs M M Johnson who have resided in Graham since January.
Tomorrow is Mothers Day and the Baptist Church invites all to honor mothers with Sunday School at 9 45 and preaching at 11 a m The pastor C R Taylor urges the community to join in tribute to mothers whether living or with the Lord.
In Austin on May 6 a Texas Health Department inquiry confirmed no state premium for triplets or quadruplets. A Texas physician wrote that the newborns are fine healthy boys and will make good Texans.
H. D. Hemphill vice president of Graham National Bank and newly elected Chamber director urges immediate repairs on the Bunger road and a permanent upgrade of the Graham South Bend highway. He will wait for the new board meeting to outline further aims.
Washington May 6 The Senate Agriculture Committee reported favorably on Senator Norris Nebraska for federal regulation of the packing industry. The Norris bill was amended to create live stock commissions overseeing government control. Norris said he would seek to bring the measure to the Senate soon.
Mrs. Jake L. Hamon widow of oil magnate Jake Hamon prepares to contest Clara Smith claims to a share of the estate. Heirship dispute follows Smith's acquittal and unsigned death threats are shown as Hamon vows to fight for the two children and deny paying Clara.
Washington May 6 The war department will publish slacker lists in the Congressional Record to shield newspapers from liability for erroneous names. Representative Johnson Republican South Dakota urged the move, noting possible errors but promising prompt corrections in the record.
Graham baseball club officers were chosen at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. John Jallaher named president, H. D. Hemphill treasurer, Elix Ury secretary, James B Norris assistant secretary. Two teams were appointed to raise funds to cover debts and future needs.
Jonas Kuppenheimer a longtime resident and founder of the clothing house bearing his name and a major Western firm, died at his Chicago home yesterday. Born in 1854 at Terre Haute Indiana, he helped build a leading fashion business.
Canton May 7 Sun Yat Sen, president elect of the Canton government, told United Press he will seek to unify China with local autonomy modeled on American practice upon taking office next Thursday. He would abolish military government, restore civil authority, reduce the army, and resist Japanese demands.
President Harding has accepted a role with the Allied Supreme Council and the Reparation Commission and Ambassadors' Conference. He may launch a disarmament movement via Ambassador George Harvey, who sits with the Supreme Council.
Deputy sheriff A A Graves hosts a big fish fry in Eliasville today. County Attorney Hinson and Ricker Sheriff John Saye Ranger Joe Orberg and Deputy Sheriff Black will attend. John Bowers donated his automobile to transport the party.
In Pell county near Belton officers uncovered the largest illicit distilling setup found there. The cedar brakes location held a buried still with a seventy gallon capacity. Two negroes were taken into custody by Sheriff Bonds and deputies.
Leaders of the Democrats and the Volks Partei in Berlin declare opposition to accepting the Allied reparations ultimatum. The stance complicates efforts to form a new German cabinet amid postwar political realignment.
A. L. Barnes predicts fifteen rigs will be ordered or under construction in the Bunger district within five days after the Parsons well payout. The Graham Oil Syndicate South Bend field, leases with short terms, and nearby wells like Askew and Lisle signal a quick revival and a Graham expansion. The Barnes well awaits water line completion at 700 feet.
C W Whitehead of Penn Cities Oil Company states the firm acquired a royalty interest in the Godley lease in the South Bend fields from A B Edwards of Henrietta. The lease contains four producing wells with others planned. The stated consideration is about $50 000.
In Tokyo a geisha received Imperial cigarettes from General Takayanagi and shared them with the geisha as celebrations ended. The general was removed from duty on the Imperial affair sparked debate across the Empire about discipline and propriety.
