Weather notes indicate a low around 45 to 50 degrees as clearing skies move in. Tuesday is expected to be fair and mild with continued warmth and light winds. Saturday’s forecast calls for a low near 42 and a high of 78 with about 0.06 inches of rain. Sunday should see a low near 46 and a high around 82 with a chance of rain around 11 am. Today’s temperature around 73.
Two cars collided on U S 50 one mile east of Thornton injuring three people. Russell S Taylor 25 of Terra Alta skidded, crossed center line, causing the crash that damaged a 1953 car driven by Donald R Ridenour 32 of Newburg. Ridenour and passengers treated at Grafton Hospital. one kept for observation.
Buckwheat Festival begins Thursday in Preston County featuring buckwheat cakes and maple syrup. Sponsored by the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department, the three day event is chaired by Dr. P. E. Kercheval, a local dentist since 1921. County residents claim local buckwheat and syrup rival Vermont’s.
Spino was ordered to surrender to Sheriff Guy Cole of Taylor County and begin a 60 day jail term from a February 20 conviction for illegal sale of intoxicating liquors at his Fetterman Bridge establishment. He faced a $250 fine plus costs. an appeal to the State Supreme Court was denied last June. A divorce for Margaret Barcus from Howard Barcus and child custody were also granted in today’s session with custody awarded to the mother.
Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza, who narrowly escaped assassination, is now totally paralyzed on his left side. A bulletin from the Canal Zone health bureau said his condition, previously reported satisfactory after a neurosurgical operation, has worsened.

UNITED PRESS reports five people were killed on West Virginia roads over the weekend as the 1956 toll rose. Victims include William J. Yoho Jr. 19 of Marshall County who died after a convertible wreck on Route 2 near Moundsville and Thomas R. Reed 31 of St. Albans who swerved over an island on U.S. 60 near South Charleston.
Postmaster Loren A Hoffman reports a single government pen stolen from the Grafton post office lobby last night around 10 o clock. The four pen collection was secured to a glass table with a chain, which was snapped. the thief also took the chain. Authorities warn the item could be passed as a dime.
Hurricane Flossy struck New Orleans with up to 100 mph winds, leaving two dead in the gulf and driving thousands from flooded lowlands. The storm moved toward Alabama as Coast Guard cutters and Navy helicopters resumed rescue efforts at dawn.
Grafton Salvation Army advisory board sets annual drive for the Grafton Citadel fort opening October 1 through October 30. Howard Lord named chairman with Cliff Reynolds as cochairman. Drive divisions include Dr. Charles Haislip Claude Ebert Mrs. Virginia Mason and C. E. Bertrand. Drive letters go out by September 30 for advance gifts. An updated report on this year’s drive and pledges was given at the post vacation meeting.
Adlai Stevenson will deliver a major conservation and reforestation address at the 20th annual Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins on October 4. The trip marks his first West Virginia appearance, with activities including a press conference and a 1:30 p.m. speech. officials note thousands attend annually and the trip follows a campaign stop in the state.
