Circuit Judge C C Chambers directed a grand jury to investigate Logan County Board of Education affairs amid rumors of teacher intimidation and large gasoline purchases. Prosecutor Joyce subpoenaed superintendent E V Parsons for records on gasoline and auto repairs, noting political campaigning during a tense period.
Maine elects three House members, governor and other state officers. Maryland nominates candidates for senator, governor and six House seats. Tomorrow primaries in eight states. various party nominations and runoffs continue. Maryland's Tydings-Lewis primary ends in the limelight.

Grafton Rotary club sponsors four lyceum numbers to restore cultural entertainment in Grafton. Beginning September 26 the series will run on successive Mondays at the Grafton High School auditorium. Net profits go to underprivileged children. tickets are 1 for adults and 75 cents for students. single admissions are 50 cents and 25 cents.
City commissioners meet to approve Grand street WPA improvement under the city plan. The council forwards the Grand street job request to Fairmont district WPA offices for approval after Front street completion.
Unforeseen complications Monday blocked Mayor P F Gillispie from announcing the selection by a special committee and the Grafton City Commission of a site for the municipal hospital worth 125000 dollars. The mayor did not disclose details but expected a press briefing later in the week.

In Columbus Ohio on Rapt. 12 deputies rushed to a local address after a call of a man killing his wife. They found only a kiss between man and wife, the complaint sheet noting they arrived to a kissing scene rather than a fatal attack.
Rochester Minnesota September report states President Roosevelt received news from Mayo Clinic that his son James's gastric ulcer surgery succeeded. James underwent a 1 hour 45 minute operation with benign outcome while the president, in Hyde Park, sped to Rochester by special train. Physicians call James condition entirely satisfactory and the Roosevelts relieved. Betsy James' wife attended as well.
Logan report states John Malcum, 46, was held for questioning over Oscar Adams's death after Adams died four hours after his wife found him unconscious in the Shamrock home yard. Mrs Adams said she left Adams and Marcum drinking together Saturday night and stayed with friends at Mt. Gay. Adams had two head wounds, not believed to be fatal, and no charges were filed against Marcum pending more investigation.

Prague Sept 12 The Czechoslovak government decided to invoke martial law in parts of the Sudeten German region tonight if disorders arise after Hitler’s Nürnberg speech. It would be used only in extreme necessity with authorities pledging to maintain order at all costs as Nazi fervor grows in Sudeten districts.
In Itasca county Minnesota sheriff Elmer Madsen said deputies roam dense woods and patrol roads seeking 16 year old Harry Yearn after a farm near the Jama residence burned. Matt Jama, his wife, and their adopted daughter Aili Jama were found slain in or near their blazing farm home with a smoldering haystack by the barn, as authorities investigated the triple deaths and a possible juvenile suspect.
Charleston dispatch reports the Supreme Court refused a writ of mandamus by L M Auer to block Julian F Whitaker from the Republican McDowell county board of education slate. Auer claimed Whitaker, a registrar in his precinct, was ineligible. court denied removing Whitaker or altering the ballot.
Portsmouth reports an itinerant 53 year old Herbert W Sprange of Portland Me faced arraignment on a charge of murder after County Prosecutor Stephen Wheeler said he confessed slaying eight year old Barbara Driscoll. The crime occurred in a railroad yard toolshed last Monday with the girl struck on the head by a stone found near the body. Sprague was arrested after police found him asleep in an abandoned warehouse with empty bottles nearby.

Roseburg Oregon September 12 A contrite thief who robbed the Reverend Raynor Smith's parsonage left a note asking the minister to pray for him. The burglar apologized and urged mercy in a terse, remorseful message.
The Taylor county grand jury opened shortly after 9 am to hear 105 witnesses this week. Prosecuting Attorney Francis L. Warder indicated the panel may be in session through Wednesday or Thursday. Sixty eight witnesses were summoned for Monday with 37 more slated for Tuesday, including Chief of Police A E Geckard who was absent. Judge Herbert W. Dent gave brief guidance as two jury commissioners presided.
