Coal Industry Blames Itself For Coal Market Woes
Washington reports a spokesman for the railroads told the Interstate Commerce Commission that the coal industry bears responsibility for strained conditions in the bituminous market. J M Souby of the Association of American Railroads argued surcharges did not cause reduced shipments, while coal operators face competition and below cost production. Consumers counsel Donald Gallagher urged against continuing the 10 cent per ton surcharge, warning it would curb shipments and force rate cuts to keep prices stable for buyers. E C Calhoun joined in opposition on behalf of the coal commission.
