Washington sponsors seek to accelerate affordable homes by removing a contested section. The measure to authorize up to 100000000 in government loans for nonprofits would run 50 years at a stated interest rate. Senator Sparkman says the section will be separated as a new bill for later debate.
A westbound streamliner left the rails near Ames Iowa early today. A sleeping car was ripped open killing one person and injuring four severely. The coach jackknifed into a box car on a siding while baggage and seats tore loose. Three sleeper cars also derailed as the Chicago and Northwestern train stopped within 200 yards.
A West Virginia Coal Association spokesman said the soft coal miners strike, now in its third week, cost the state about 10 million dollars. The estimate broke the losses into 30 million in coal that would have been sold, 20 million in miners wages, 18 million in related revenue, 10 million in related field wages, 6 million in related sales, and 16 million in other areas. He charged John L. Lewis sought power over an entire industry.

A hurricane moving from the Gulf of Mexico was about 135 miles southeast of Brownsville at 6 45 am CST and expected to strike the Texas coast between Corpus Christi and Galveston late today. Winds up to 90 mph were reported with gale and hurricane force conditions forecast along the coast. High tides were predicted from Louisiana to Texas, with squalls and rough seas widespread northward through the northern gulf.
After a year abroad touring Europe a westbound 1939 or later sedan driven by C E Summerhays 76 veered off Route 50 near Cozy Rest then rolled down a berm and turned over several times. Summerhays his wife Phekie 56 of Salt Lake City and Emma Schaerr 59 of Los Angeles were hospitalized in Grafton City Hospital with lacerations and bruises. X rays checked for broken bones. all three patients listed as stable.
In Cumberland Maryland about 1200 Baltimore and Ohio railroad employees were due back at shops in Cumberland and Keyser West Virginia today. A spokesman warned that unless the coal mine shutdown ends soon most workers will receive four day notice and be furloughed again.
Louisville report says twenty seven saddle horses perished in a barn fire on William W. Evans farm near Fern Creek. Fire spread rapidly before discovery. horses valued at about 13,500 and barn at 10,000. Evans, an attorney and former police court judge pro tem, filed the loss.
