A Sunday storm prompts praise for Grafton residents and services as doctors nurses and volunteers help stranded families. City managers highway crews and local businesses mobilize to keep streets open and aid arriving, with WPDX radio coordinating safety messages and a December 10 Community Concert noted on deck.
U N forces face possible collapse as Chinese and North Korean counterattacks halt the rapid advance. The 24th Division withdraws from Chongju for a second time this month, while new lines are being formed along the northwest front. Artillery counts mount as the enemy presses, and Allied planners seek a halt to secure a firm defense before any renewed push.
A head on collision between Cumberland and Keyser left Mrs. Bill Price formerly Virginia Debendarfer badly injured. Price, a University of Cincinnati teacher, suffered facial lacerations and shock. her husband a WVU master’s student broke his ankle and endured shock. In the car was Price’s brother Bob Price who received multiple rib fractures and internal injuries, and his fiancée Alice Jean Bergman sustained two broken legs. The Prices’ parents near Pruntytown could not reach the hospital due to a blizzard.
Corporal Ralph Lee Shaw, 22, son of Mrs. Anne E. Shaw of East Knotts avenue, reported missing in action in Korea on November 2. He re enlisted in 1948 after serving in the occupation army and went to Japan 14 months ago with the First Cavalry Division. Shaw is survived by his mother, two brothers William A. Shaw and Harry F. Shaw, and four sisters.
John I Booth vice president of the Grafton Kiwanis Club announced this morning that the annual athletic banquet at the high school on Tuesday evening has been postponed due to weather. The event is not cancelled it will be held later at a time to be announced. The club will hold its regular meeting Tuesday November 28 at the usual place.
An important hotel meeting is scheduled in Charleston next Friday. Those attending will include managers of the American Hotels Corporation from 16 states, Panama and the Dominican Republic. Heading the list of visitors will be J Leslie Kincaid president and Stuart E Hockenbury executive vice president.
Charleston West Virginia today felt relief as temperatures rose after a harsh weekend. The weather bureau forecast no return of blizzard conditions with temperatures climbing to the 28 to 45 degree range in various regions and lows around 15 to 25 degrees tonight.
A troop train collided head on with a freight train near Screven Georgia just before eight this morning. Fire erupted as both engines burned with a depot fire reported. Initial word mentions possible injuries but no confirmed fatalities.
Virgil Rohrbaugh, superintendent of Taylor County Schools, announced all schools in Grafton and Taylor County will be closed at least until Wednesday morning. Further reopening details to be published in the Sentinel on Tuesday. Sanatorial stairs help retain heat to protect water pipes. no structural damage or roof danger reported.
The dinner planned at Andrews Methodist Church Saturday evening to honor John H. Bradford and J. H. Lindsay by Baltimore and Ohio railroad employees has been cancelled due to weather. The two former local railroad officials were recently promoted by the company.
Snowbound Grafton and Taylor county face a third day of paralysis with over 36 inches of snow and subfreezing temps. City Manager A Page Lockard says no emergency exists though bridges and major streets require shoveling. An appeal for volunteers drew few responders as city graders labor through the night to clear routes for limited travel.
A troop train collided with a long freight near Screven Georgia injuring three soldiers and one trainman with several others hurt mildly. Fire from burning fuel and wreckage spread to the depot as vehicles burned. engineers escaped as brakes failed and the troop train plowed into the freight.
Mrs Rosie Moats near Rowlesburg collapsed in deep snow while tending chickens. Exposed to the cold for about two hours she was rescued and taken to a Philippi hospital in critical condition with unborn child at risk. Her husband died last Tuesday.
Anime meetings set for Charleston were postponed due to a blizzard. The county assessors county commissioners and the state sheriff s association were to meet in the capital city today. They will be held instead December 11 and 12.

Call 515 for assistance, or 1424 1536 after 6 p.m. They urge truck, jeep, or bulldozer loan offers and help for the ill or those without food. Despite hazards, carriers and staff will keep publishing daily and deliver papers via trucks to outlying areas. Businesses may place weather related closure notices.
Grafton merchants and staff, braving the blizzard, keep shops open to serve the public and honor payrolls. At ten o clock many outlets listed remained open including Malones Drug Store, J C Penney, Union Drug, Bartons, The Style Shop, A and P Super Market, Leonard's Grocery, Empire Market, Siehler Furniture, Nat ional Auto Store, Archdeacons, Keenex Motor, and more.
First Lieutenant Vance B. McWhorter aged 28, son of Mrs H G Klem of 138 Lincoln Street, was killed in action in Korea on November 19, per a war department telegram received by his mother. A Honolulu University graduate, he re enlisted in 1949, had Army Reserve service, and is survived by brother James of Knoxville.
