In Warsaw Konstantin Rokossovsky, former Soviet marshal, gains his third major Polish position within the ruling party. He was elected to the Central Committee after quitting the Red army a week earlier and became a Polish citizen, taking a Polish army marshal rank.
Thomas Le Schwader, 20, a junior college student, shot himself after his wedding night with 16 year old Edna Hamman. Found in his car along the Los Angeles River, a note on his marriage license called him a coward. Edna, a Compton College student, testified she believed she loved him but felt the relationship turn sour on the trip from Yuma.
Fifteen miners trapped 600 feet underground at Maple Hill Colliery in Mahanoy City were rescued by fellow workers six hours after a rock fall blocked a tunnel on the seventh level. General Manager Edward Fox said a mine car jump caused timber collapse and the slide filled the passage with rock and coal as workers tapped for aid.
A Polish mother, Leokadia Rolblecki, gave birth to a girl aboard a Scandinavian Airlines flight near Prestwick en route to New York, the second transatlantic birth in a month. The infant joins a family of three and highlights growing in-flight birth occurrences aboard transatlantic routes. A separate case reports a boy born October 17 to Mrs James C Parker aboard an American Overseas Airlines flight returning from Germany, mother of the sergeant.
Mrs Jennid wit, 77, mother of Walter, fell from her hospital room at Doctor's hospital while seeking an evening meal. A nightgown was found on the 87th street sidewalk below. Officials say she either fell or was admitted Oct 24 for heart ailment care.
Washington says the Danube shipping commission set up November 11 at Galatz is invalid. The note to Russia and five Soviet bloc states alleges the arrangement creates a Soviet monopoly on Danubian commerce and violates peace treaties and long standing international waterways concepts. France and the United Kingdom also deliver parallel notes.
Barboursville seeks to join Huntington in a $6,000,000 sewer project after receiving a notice to cease polluting the Guyandotte river. Barboursville argues its sanitary sewage could be routed into Huntington’s plant, reducing the town’s need for a separate project. Town Attorney W. H. Daniel notes a link between systems would redirect sewage from the Guyandotte.
Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company's appeal for higher rates will be argued before the supreme court on November 22. The court will hear preliminary argument on docketing the proceeding for a full hearing later and may permit a higher rate schedule pending final determination. The company contests a Public Service Commission order granting a third post war rate increase limited to about 650000 a year in added revenue, while seeking about 4 million. It asked the court to make temporary higher rates effective and offered to post bond to refund any portion not approved after final hearing.
Narayan V. Godse and Narayan B. Apte were executed at Ambala central jail after a two year legal battle. The 26 year old editor of the Poona Daily fired the fatal shot in New Delhi on January 30, 1948. Both men carried sacred texts and smiled as the trap released them.
A six year old girl, Linda Joyce Glucoft, was found slain near her home with an axe. A 67 year old man is wanted as a suspect after a nightlong manhunt. Police describe the case as a major investigation in the city’s history with a child-murder past highlighted by earlier infamous cases. The victim’s parents are Jules and Lillian Glucoft.
In a City of Grafton liquor case, defense attorneys Francis Warder and W P Samples persuaded the judge that search warrants were improperly drawn. The case against Harold Boston, colored, was dismissed without his appearance or that of his counsel. The defense argued the warrant targeted Boyce as a restaurant operator, while Boston claimed the liquor was in his home on an upper floor.

Alvin Poling aged 18, son of Mr and Mrs Troy Poling of 346 Warder Avenue, is awarded Eagle Scout. He joined Troop No 6 in January 1944 at age 12 and has five years of perfect attendance. Poling earned Silver Award in 1944, Gold Award in 1946 and 1947, Bronze Award in 1948, God and Country Church Award in August 1949, and attained ranks from Second Class in 1944 to Life Scout in 1949.
Charleston bid opening for a 4.5 million dollar state office building. Designed by Cass Gilbert Jr, the eight story structure will house many departments now in rented space and feature air conditioning and over 100000 square feet of usable offices behind the Capitol across Washington Street.
The Boone County Coal Corporation asked the Supreme Court for a writ to require unemployment security Director Cabell Davis to levy only a .7 percent tax on its payrolls. It argued its rate rose to 2.7 percent due to a one week delay in filing a report due July 31, 1948, caused by conflicting vacations of its treasurer and auditor.
